This is the ancient gate at the Tonghui River which is a part of man-made ancient Beijing-Hangzhou Grand Canal dug one thousand years ago. The Tonghui River was named by by Kublai Khan who found the solution to the problem of carrying foods collected in Tongzhou to Dadu (now central Beijing) by building the Tonghui River. In 1293, Guo Shoujing constructed a pier in the Gaobeidian area on the bank of the Beijing-Hangzhou Grand Canal. |
