She County is about 27km in the northeast of Huangshan City. It is famous for its rich culture and long history. It is listed as one of four best preserved ancient towns in China, along with Pingyao in Shanxi, Lijiang in Yunan and Longzhong in Sichuan Province.

She County is representative of Hui Culture, the cradle of Peiking Opera. Shexian County (She County) is the original area of Hui merchants. She County is the main production area for the Ink and ink stone, the two treasures of the four treasures of the study.

She County is also nicknamed “the county of Paifang”. Paifang is also called “pailou’, a traditional Chinese architectural archway.

Where to stay in Huangshan

Friday, June 8th, 2012

Plan your Huangshan Tour? One thing you have to do is to book your hotels in Huangshan on your short trip to Huangshan. You are advised to get some information on the layout of Haungshan before you make up your mind to finalise your hotels in Huangshan.

Narrowly speaking, Huanshan refers to the city core of Huangshan, formerly known as Tunxi (Tunxi Old Town). In a broad sense, Huangshan also refers to a big Huangshan including Tunxi Old Town, Tangkou Town and Huangshan Scenic Area. Many tourists will choose to stay one night at Tunxi and the other night on the summit. Actually people have more choices: stay at Tangkou, or at the foot of Huangshan Mountain ( Hotspring area and Yungu area ).

People have to do a bus transfer at Tangkou Town no matter you come from Tunxi Bus Station or Tunxi Railway Station, where you are again requested to take a so-called environmental bus to the foot of Huangshan Mountain.

Tunxi – Tangkou: 65km
Tangkou – the east foot or west foot of Huangshan: about 10km

So you may stay in Tunxi, Tangkou, Hotspring Area at the south of Huangshan or Yungu Area at the east foot of Huangshan Mountain as stated below:

Stay at Tunxi(屯溪):
Tunxi is the old town, th city core of Huangshan which is named after Huangshan Mountain. The attractions in Tunxi include Laojie (Old Street), a souvenir street lined with ooden shops and Ming-style Huizhou buildings. Wancuilou on the Laojie offers an in-depth look at Huizhou architecture, furniture and antiques.

Hongcun Village, Huizhou Dwellings – Chinese Vernacular Dwellings

Wednesday, March 30th, 2011

Hongcun Village is located at the foot of the southwest side of Mt. Huangshan, only 11kms away from Yixian town, 60km west of Tunxi Huangshan. The whole village is like a buffalo lying on its side surrounded by green hills and blue water with dwelling houses its “body”, South Lake its “belly”, Moon Pool its “stomach”, Leigang Hill the “head”, two huge trees the “horns”, a winding stream as the “intestines” and the four bridges as the “four feet”.

Hongcun Village is typical of Huizhou Dwellings, one of the vernacular dwellings in China, which are adapted to the characters of hills and waters there and gave full play to them. Hongcun Village is a village of rivers and lakes, like a Chinese paintingscroll rolling before you. The village now boasts 158 dwelling houses dating back to the Ming (1368-1644) and Qing (1644-1911) dynasties, nearly 140 are still in good shape. Hongcun Village was added to the list of the World Cultural Heritage by UNESCO in late 2000.

Follow me to explore Hongcun Village.

Hongcun is located northward against Leigang Hill and south on the South Lake. The water from the South Lake is distributed through the channels to each household in the village.

Water Channels in the village (宏村水系)
The general channels are 60cm and one meter deep, crossing circuitously through the lanes of the villages from the northwestward to southeastward extending in all directions.
In every dooryard flows a limpid streamlet. Like a blood circulatory system, the channel system stimulates the spritual and material life of the village. The channel system plays of the role of washing, fire protection, drainage and adjustment of temperature.

All the streamlets flowing through the channels finally converge on a pond – Moon Pond (月沼) at the center of the village.
