An Unmistakably Gorgeous Destination: Guanxi Province

Friday, March 16th, 2012

Explore Guanxi Province for an Experience of a Lifetime

There are a lot of places to visit in China. However, if one intends to go and study in the country and experience the Chinese culture, then Yunnan Province is the ideal destination. Right from the weather conditions to the people, Yunnan has ample reasons for it to become the cultural destination of the country. Also, Yunnan has some of the most beautiful locations in the vicinity and one of them is Guanxi Province which is known for the splendor of its natural beauty among other things.

Places to Visit in Guanxi Province

All those who intend to visit China as a part of summer programs for high school students or study abroad programs should choose their destination carefully. China has, in the past two decades, made itself known as a country with superpower. The development is fueled by the country’s enterprising citizens and the iron rule of the past has ensured that the nation remains self sufficient. Therefore China is one of those unique places in the world where its culture is prevalent even in its newest developments. It has become a popular destination for students and professionals who are looking for a thorough experience during gap year jobs and gap year programs.

This is why one of the best places to visit in China is Yunnan Province. Unlike the far eastern part of the country, this province does not have extreme weather conditions and therefore can be visited all year round. Its weather is relatively cooler in summer and remains the same all around the year. Therefore it is considered favorable for all those who are used to living in temperate climates. The second advantage of learning Mandarin and experiencing the Chinese culture in Yunnan is that it is the cultural hub of the country with 51 of the 52 ethnic minorities living there. But this is not all. Yunnan has become a popular destination of study abroad in China also because it is close to many South Asian countries that help enrich the China tour as a travel destination. Likewise some of the most beautiful places and provinces are in the immediate vicinity.

One such province is Guanxi Province that lies to the east. It is the home of Guilin, one of the biggest and most famous tourist destinations of China. It is said that it is by far the most beautiful city in China.

The Li River winds through the City of Guilin from north to south.

The Reed Flute Cave is located in the northwestern outskirts of the Guilin city. It is about 240 meters long, providing a fantastic wonderland of karst caves with landscape and rural scenery.

Longji Terraced Field is located about 100km northeast of the downtown Guilin, about 2 hours’ drive from Guilin. There is a group of large-scaled rice terraces built into the hillside. Some of the terraces look like great chains, other look like ribbons as they extend from the foot to the top of the hills.

If one wants to completely experience the beauty of the city, the best mode of travel is not the usual walking or riding; one should go on a cruise along Li River from Guilin to a place nearby called Yangshuo. It takes 4 hours to reach Guilin City and in the meantime, the cruise shows a traveler some of the most magnificent sceneries all along the way.

The Li River runs from the City of Guilin to Yangshuo County

For the more adventurous individuals, there are the biking and the rock climbing facilities, and rock climbing in particular has fast gained popularity. It is one of the best ways to enjoy the beauty of the area.

Another remarkable natural asset of Guanxi Province is the Detain Fall. It lies on the border of Vietnam and Guanxi. It is a waterfall that has many levels and is one of the biggest waterfalls in the world. Those who have missed Niagara can experience something similar here. This waterfall too is one of the most popular tourist destinations of the region.

All these features and much more have made Guanxi Province a favorite weekend destination of students visiting China.

Guilin Tourist Scams, Tourist traps in Guilin

Thursday, June 2nd, 2011

Guilin is a picturesque tourist city for both domestic and international travelers, with many things going for it. There are several tourist scams that visitors should be aware of. Always be careful with what you do and with who you can trust during your Guilin Tour.

“Black” Taxis Scams
“Black” taxis don’t mean that the colors of the taxis are black, but refer to the illegal taxis or cars that can be found all over China. Guilin is not an exception. You may encounter them almost everywhere you need a taxi, including the airport, the city center, or around attractions.
The drivers will approach you and asking “where are you going”. They will not only overcharge you but there have been reports of tourists taken out into the middle of nowhere where several of the black taxi drivers friend showed up and took all of the tourists belongings. Don’t even talk to the drivers approach you.

Super-cheap Tours Scams
There are always many cheap tours offer to you when you arriving at Guilin. For example, tour to Li River. They will take you to shopping places and force you to buy a lot of things which you don’ want to buy, and you may spend more time at these places than at the places that you intended to visit. What’s more, the services are not very good: dirty bus, bad lunch, for example. You should find a standard tour agency to start your tour in China.

Black Tour Guide near the Dock
You can find “Black” Tour Guide almost everywhere of Guilin City, especially near the dock of Li River. They may sell tickets, or ask you to live in their hotel. Most of them are very talkative. At first, they will offer you a very high price for the hotel. If you aren’t interested in it, they will offer you a very low price. After you give them money, they may run away. Just remember, there is no free lunch in the world, so leave them far away from you.

Shopping in Small Stores
Most of the small stores in Guilin are not cheaper than large and famous stores. What’s more, some things in the small stores are fake. If you want to buy some souvenirs in Guilin, you can go to the large stores. Don’t let your good humour taking a beating because of a expensive souvenir.

Child Beggars
Like other famous cities in China, you will have the chance to see some children beg for money in Guilin, sometimes even grabbing onto your legs until you pay them some money. There are reports that these children may have been kidnapped from other places specifically to be used for begging purposes. Just avoid those child beggars. If you give money to child beggars, you may have the risk of getting a swarm of them.

Pickpockets
Pickpockets always can be found in the major tourist sites of China, Guilin is also not an exception. Always keep your eyes on your bags, and carry your wallets in a front pocket or a pocket inside your coat when you are walking on the street or taking the bus. Beware of these young men and also of the ladies in whose interests they ply their trade. If you are stolen, or you find other being stolen, or you have pickpocket clues, you are encouraged to call the anti-pickpocket hotline 110.
