My Trip to Southern Xinjiang
( October 10-17, 2005 )
At the invitation of both the tourism bureau of Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region and Zhongkun Group, 55 incoming tour managers from 40 tour operators of 5 big cities like Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, Chengdu and Hong Kong, have a fam trip of southern Xinjiang October 10 - 17, 2005. I'm lucky enough to be one of the 55 travel agency people.
The familiarization group traverse 2000km across the northern edge of the Tarim Basin - Korla, Luntai, Kuqa, Aksu and further to Kashgar. The group visit the diversifolia in Luntai; Kizil Thousand-Buddha Caves and Tianshan Grand Canyon in Kuqa; The Magical Wood Garden in Wensu of Aksu and Id Kah Mosque, Abakh Khoja Tomb, Residentail Area on High Platform and Sunday Bazaar Kashgar; Auyitagh Forest Park in Kizulsu.
The fam tour is warmly welcomed by the reception units in these areas. Through the 7-day study tour, all the memebrs on the group have a better understanding of the travel resources in the Southern Xinjiang. The southern Xinjiang boasts of unique travel resources - local folk custom, Islamic culture, ethnic groups, desert, gobi, green grassland, glacier, diversifolia forest...
Traveling the southern Xiniang at the present stage is still an expensive activity. Especially the transportation cost is much higher. And also not so people even in the travel agency circle have the opportunity to visit the Southern Xinjiang. So traveling the Southern Xinjiang belongs to a kind of luxury tour in China.
Below is the skech itinerary of this study trip of Southern Xinjiang:
October 10, 2005: Beijing - Urumqi - Korla by overnight train
October 11: Korla - Luntai - Kuqa by road ( 260km )
12: Kuqa
13: Kuqa - Aksu by road ( 280km )
14: Aksu - Artush - Kashgar by raod ( 500km )
15; Kashar
16: Kashgar - Urumai by flight
17: Urumqi - Beijing
All members get together in Urumqi on October 10, 2005 and take the overnight train from Urumqi to Korla.

Early in the morning of October 11, 2005 we arrive at the station of Korla. For this fam trip, Korla is just a transit city, from which we will go to Luntai and Kuqa. Korla is a clean and modern oil city, capital city of the Bayin'gholin Mongol Autonomous Prefecture, larger than France, and the largest profeture in China. It is located on the edge of Taklamakan Desert and the northeast edge of the largest basin in China, Tarim Basin and about 500 km (about 311 miles) south of Urumqi.
There are two major attractions around Korla:
1.Tiemen Pass (Iron Gate) - Tiemen Pass (Iron Gate) was originally built in the Jin Dynasty (265-420). It lies 8 kilometers north of Korla. As one of the 26 famous passes, it had strategic importance and was the throat of the ancient Silk Road.
2.Bosten Lake - Bosten Lake is the largest inland fresh water lake in China. The lake looks like a fairyland winning its reputation of being a "pearl" in the desert sea.
I will come back to visit Korla if I have the opportunity.
