Jingzhou Travel Guide

Location: Jingzhou is located on the banks of the Yangtze River.

History: The ancient city of Jingzhou is what is now the main urban area of Jiangling County, which is one of the counties within Jingzhou City. Ying, within the borders of present day Jingzhou, was the capital of 20 kings over 411 years of the State of Chu during the Spring and Autumn and Warring States Periods of the Zhou Dynasty (1046 BCE - 256 BCE).
The city is said to have been built with earth by Guan Yu in the Three Kingdoms period. During the Southern and Northern Dynasties period, it was the capital of the Western Liang. In the Five Dynasties and Ten Kingdoms Period, it was the capital of the Nanping State.

Transportation: Jingzhou is a vital point of transportation in southern Jingzhou Province and the Yangtze River. The 483km-length Golden Waterway of the river is flowing through the city and the Shashi is one of the main ports in the middle reaches of the river, so Jingzhou is an essential stop of a Three Gorges tour.

Weather: Jingzhou is situated in the sub-tropical monsoon area, having abundant sunshine, warm weather and long frost free period. Like the neighboring city of Wuhan, the summer is very hot in Jingzhou. The average daytime high temperature during July and August is generally above 35 degrees Celsius and quite cold in winter. The annual average rainfall is about 1200mm, most of the rain is fallen during summertime.

Ancient City of Jingzhou-- formerly known as Jiangling City, is located in Jingzhou District, Jingzhou City, Hubei Province. It is located in the middle reaches of the Yangtze River and the hinterland of the Jianghan Plain. It is one of the important birthplaces of the Chu culture and the Three Kingdoms culture. The ancient city of Jingzhou is divided into three layers, with water city on the outside, brick city in the middle and earth city inside.



Jingzhou Museum - located at No.166 Jingzhong Road, Jingzhou District, Jingzhou City, is a local comprehensive museum, a national AAAA tourist attraction, covering an area of 48000 square meters. Built in 1958, the museum covers an area of more than 50000 square meters, with a building area of 23000 square meters and a greening area of more than 11000 square meters. Jingzhou Museum has more than 130000 cultural relics in its collection, including 492 sets of national first-class cultural relics. In May 2008, Jingzhou Museum was included in the list of national first-class museums.
