250 km northeast of Beijing lie two UNESCO world heritage sites - Eight Outer Temples listed 1994 and Mountain Resort listed in 1997 under the jurisdiction of Chengde, a prefecture-level city in Hebei province.
Most of the eight outlying temples ( located on the north and east outside Mountain Resort ) were built in Tibetan style after the palace and temples in Lhasa during the reign of Qing Dynasty ( 1644-1911 ) as a smart policy of reconciliation with the hope of strengthening the unification with the minority nationalities like Tibetan, Mongolian and more who believed in Lamaism.
The Mountain Resort was the secondary political center just after Beijing for about 200 years in Qing Dynasty (1644 - 1911) as a frontier of safeguiding the inland China and exchanging with the minority nationalities. Train travel to Chengde
Several regular trains running between Beijing and Chendge. But only one fast and direct train going between the two cities: Beijing Chengde K7711(08:05 - 13:31), Chengde BeijingK7712(13:53 - 18:19), 4 and half hour ride, soft RMB136.
The fast train K7711 starts from Beijing Railway Station (北京站); The slow train No.6417 starts from Beijing East Railway Station(北京东站).
Overland Travel to Chengde

Travel to Chengde by a private car or van is also highly recommended largely due to the completion of Beijing Chengde Expressway ( Jingcheng Expressway). Jingcheng Expressway is 209.1km in length with 132.4 km in Beijing and 76.7 in Chengde. Its completion has shortened the Beijing Chengde driving time to 2 hours instead of 4 hours using the old highway. It passess 62 bridges and over 10 tunnels.
Its speed is minimum 50 km/h, maximum 120 km/h. The expressway has 6 lanes (3 up, 3 down) for sections closer to Beijing, 4 lanes for other sections.
With this Jingcheng Expressway, you can easily drive to Huirou District, Miyun District. What's more, it is much convenient for you to get to Simatai Great Wall (120km) and Jingshanling Great Wall (128km).
When to Visit in Chengde
Chengde belongs to the continental climate. Chengde has distinct four seasons and the temperature is distinct especially between day and night. The rainy season is summer.
April to May is the best months for spring outing.Summer is the peak seasons for visitors to go Chengde. Summer is hot and humid. But it is much cool than Beijing, due to the high altitude of at least 1000 metres. Autumn is also a nice season for traveling to Chengde. Get around in Chengde
