Now Chongqing is one of the four municipalities directly controlled by the central governent (the other three being Beijing, Shanghai and Tianjin). Chongqing has a four-season humid subtropical climate with monsoonal influences. Chongqing is very hot summer being one of the "Three Furnaces" in China with highs of 33 to 34 °C (91 to 93 °F) in August. Chongqing's summers can be fiercely hot, so bring sunblock, but bring an umbrella too: heavy rain can fall at any time of the year.
Winters are somewhat mild, but with many foggy days. Foggy weather is most prevalent during spring and winter days, hence the nickname of "the Fog Capital". The best time to visit Chongqing, for most people would choose spring and autumn.

All visitors are suggested to use their own judgment before deciding where to eat and are wise to avoid anywhere that appears obviously unsanitary. Roadside vendors may not have access to running water so the cleanliness of their dishes and eating utensils may be questionable. There are plenty of sanitary venues, however, so it's really not difficult to find somewhere safe to dine if you just take the trouble to be a little discerning.
