Yichang Travel Guide
Location: Yichang lies on the northern bank of the Yangtze River in Hubei Province.
History: In ancient times Yichang was known as Yiling. There are historical records telling that in the year 278 BC during the Warring States period, the Qin general Bai Qi set fire to Yiling. In 222 AD Yichang was also the site of the Battle of Yiling during the Three Kingdoms Period.
In 1876, under the Qing Guangxu Emperor, Yichang was opened to foreign trade as a trading port after the Second Opium War with Britain. In 1940, during the Second Sino-Japanese War, the Battle of Zaoyang-Yichang took place in the area.
Transportation: By Air-Sanxia Airport has played an important role in the construction of the Three Gorges Dam Project.
By Train-Yichang Railway Station was built in 1974 and refurbished in 2002. Surprisingly, the railway station was built halfway up a mountain.
By Highway-The development of motorways in Yichang has been very rapid. Yihuang Expressway (from Yichang to Huangshi), Hurong Expressway (from Shanghai to Chengdu) and three national roads play an important role in Yichang's highway communication.
By Water-Yichang Port (also known as the Ninth Wharf) is one of the eight important ports on Yangtze River. There are 6 wharfs scattered around the port for transporting goods as well as passengers. Taking a cruise ship in Yichang is a good way to enjoy the picturesque view along the Yangtze River and is very popular among the travelers.
