History: Rizhao boasts a long-time history, from 3500BC to 2000BC, according to A Brief Survey of World History published by Oxfordd University Press. It was under the jurisdiction of Dongyi (the ancient tribe in Eastern China) in Xia and Shang Dynasty, of Kingdom Ju from Western Zhou Dynasty till former Warring States Period.
Rizhao County was set up in 1184 and it was under the jurisdiction of Juzhou and Qingzhou in Ming Dynasty and Yizhou in Qing Dynasty. In the 24th year of the Dading Period of the Jin Dynasty, Rizhao County was established. After being part of Linyi in modern times, Rizhao became a prefecture-level city within Shandong province in 1989.
