Zhongwei Travel Guide
Location:Zhongwei City is located at the mid-western part of Ningxia, bordered by Gansu Province to the west and Inner Mongolia to the north.
During the Spring and Autumn Period, the area of Zhongwei City was a mixed settlement of Qiang and Rong ethnic groups.
After the Qin Dynasty merged with the Six Kingdoms, Zhongwei was included in the territory, and since then, 10 dynasties have established counties here. In 1933, Zhongwei County was divided into two counties: Zhongwei and Zhongning. In 1954, Ningxia was merged into Gansu Province and Zhongwei belonged to the Yinchuan Special Region.In 1958, after the establishment of Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region, Zhongwei County and Zhongning County were under the jurisdiction of Yinnan Prefecture (now Wuzhong City), while Haiyuan County was under the jurisdiction of Guyuan Prefecture (now Guyuan City). In 2004, the prefecture-level Zhongwei City was established, which governs Shapotou District (formerly Zhongwei County), Zhongning County, and Haiyuan County.

Zhongwei has convenient transportation.
Xiangshan Airport scheduled flights to Beijing, Chongqing, Xian and so on at present. Baolan, Ganwu, and Baozhong railroad lines go through Zhongwei. Zhongwei is also a central railway station connecting the Northwest and the East. It is a very important transportation hub in the Northwest.

Zhongwei is in the middle temperate zone of the arid climate region and close to Tengger Desert to the northwestern. The altitude of Zhongwei is between 2955 to 1100 meters.
There is sufficient sunshine with cold and dry spring, arid and hit summer, cool and moderate fall and frigid winter.

Gaomiao Temple
The Gaomiao Temple is located within the town of Zhongwei, 170km southwest of Yinchuan, the capital city of Ningxia Province. Gaomiao Temple was first established in the years of Yongle in Ming Dynasty, and named “New Temple”. Gaomiao Temple faces south. It is a temple combining three religions in one. The present temple is a magnificent jumble of buildings and styles covering an area of about four thousand square meters. It can be reached by ascending 24 stairs. It is really a masterpiece of ancient buildings in Ningxia. The entrance fee of Gaomiao Temple is RMB 20 and the opening hours is from 08:00 to 18:00.
Shapotou Scenic Zone
Shapotou Scenic Zone, situated in Zhongwei County, lies on the north bank of the Yellow River where it crosses the southeastern border of the Tengger Desert.
Shapotou is characterized by a cliff-like sand dune some 70 metres in height and 200 metres in width. Standing on the sand hill, one can see the desert extending to the north, and to the south, a boundless oasis.
The major activities in Shapotou Scenic Zone are Yellow River Drift, Sand Slide and Yellow River Cableway Slide. At Zhongwei bus station, you may take a bus running on a special line to Shapotou. The bus leaves every half hour. The ticket is 3 RMB. It takes you about one hour to get there. You may also go there from Zhongwei by taxi. The fair is about 20 RMB one way. The price is RMB 65 in high season, and RMB 50 in low season.
