Helanshan Rock Carvings
Around the hillsides of the Helanshan, 40 km or more off the Yinchuan City, there are several tens of thousands of rock carvings by ancient nomadic tribes, which are known as Helanshan Rock Carvings.According to the textual research by specialists, these rock carvings can be dating back to 6000 years before the dynasties of Ming and Qing. Most of the Helanshan Rock Carvings are concentrated at Helankou Pass.
The paintings were drawn in various styles with profound connotation and scattered only in certain areas. Among the animal paintings, there are running deer, blue sheep, tigers and leopards, duckbills, and flying birds. The Helan Mountain was not only a place rich in old rock arts, but also the center for ancient nomads to hold sacrifices.
Experts also noticed there were 24 light beams, 12 pieces of hair, 6 brows on each eyelid in the image of the Apollo, which they deduced bore important information about time, solar terms and years and that the painting of Apollo and some other works may exhibit the conclusions in the old people's research on maths, physics and diagram-based divination theories.
The artistic style of these rock carvings is wild and dense and thick, in simple design conceiving a unique artistic conception and value. They provide valuable materials for the study of the ways of life, ideas of religion, and war, farming and husbandry, hunting, and astronomy of various ethnic minority groups in ancient China.
Helanshan Rock carvings have produced a great influence on the world. The annual conference of the International Rock carvings Organization was convened there in October 1991.
The best time for travelers to visit Yinchuan is form March to October every year. No.2 Bus at Xinyue Square in the downtown area can take you directly to the Helanshan Rock Craving Resort. The price is 60 per person. The opening hours is 08:00 – 18:00. Children under 1.3 meters is free.
