Visiting the Dongsi Mosque in Beijing
| We was at first refused to enter this mosque, so it seems that, unlike the Ox Street Mosque ( Niujie Mosque ), they are not used to visitors. However, a young iman took pity on us ,and guided us around.
The mosque was first built in 1447. Middle Eastern-style minaret was added in 1486, but it collapsed during an earthquake in 1908. Only the dome-shaped top remains, with 揷ast in 1486攃arved on the inside .As a result, the buildings all look Chinese from the outside. The main prayer hall is made entirely of wood. The Repository Hall behind it is a beamless building ,the supporting walls of which bear varicolored motifs and are in the Ming style .On the inside of the dome-shaped roof are painted verses from the Koran .The dome itself is not visible from the outside. This mosque was protected by the late Premier Zhou Enlai from damage during the 揷ultural revolution ? Today, the mosque has four resident Imams who administer the five daily prayers and the Friday Djuma Service. When requested by foreign Muslim residents, they also perform religious ceremonies at births, weddings and funerals. ?How to get there Dongsinan Dajie, Dongcheng District ???????? Tel: 6525-2770 |
