We had an absolutely perfect day with our tour guide - Rogin Luo - who took us for a hike along The Great Wall! Didn't know what to expect and were thrilled to have him as our guide. Very imformative, knowledgable and fun! We go to experience a part of The Great Wall that was unrestored and see all its natural beauty. Got a long history lesson along the way!

After the hike, we all went to lunch at a small place at the bottom of the hill. Located in a house, we ate lunch in the proprietors bedroom! What a hoot! Rogin is the Best of the Best! This tour company delivered for us and we are extremely grateful.

Huanglong Travel Guide

Location:
Huanglong is a scenic and historic interest area in Songpan County in the northwest part of Sichuan, China. It is located in the southern part of the Minshan mountain range, 150 km north-northwest of the capital Chengdu.

History:
Huanglong has been noted since ancient times. A pair of small stone pagodas is found in the Yuya ponds at the head of Huanglong Valley. The Songpan County Chronicles recorded that Huanglong's three temples, one behind the other, were built in the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644), and attracted a large number of worshipers.
In the middle of the sixth lunar month each year, a Miaohui (temple fair) at Huanglong attracts local people from the Tibetan, Qiang and Hui ethnic groups.

Transportation:
Huanglong can be arrived from Jiuzhaigou on the north, Songpan and Chengdu on the south. Most travelers visit Huanglong after Jiuzhaigou by taking the 7:10am direct Huanglong bus at Jiutong Bus Station nearby Jiuzhaigou Park.
A collective van from Chuanzhusi to Huanglong costs around Y20/head, 40minutes. Or, you can charter a taxi / van from Jiuzhaigou or Songpan to Huanglong without stopping in Chuanzhusi in 2.5hrs or 1hr respectively. Round trip is around Y200/taxi or Y400 / 6-seat van from Jiuzhaigou(same price Jiuzhaigou-Huanglong-Songpan),Y150~300 from Songpan.

Hotels:
You can hardly fine a suitable hotel around Huanglong area. Visitors usually head for Chuanzhusi, Songpan or Jiuzhaigou for overnight.

Dining:
Most of the food of Huanglong is brought from other places, so the price is very high. You had better not hopeful to the dining of Huanglong area. You can enjoy several local snacks in the hotel, such as Potato with Zanba, Jiuzhai Dried Persimmon, Jiuzhai Sour Cabbage Noodles, etc.
Zanba: a staple food of Tibetans which looks like mainland China fried wheat flour, prepared with main ingredients of barley flour as well as pea and oat powder.
Butter Tea: Its main ingredients are butter and milk as well as walnut kernel, peanut and sesame, egg and salt, being stirred in a barrel, then mixed with boiled tea and brawn- red coloring matter.

Weather:
In Huanglong, the weather in winter is cold and long, but cool and moisture in summer. The temperature is higher in the southeast, but lower in the northwest, because of the changing altitude. The average temperature is around 7℃ all the year round. It is misty in the morning and evening and rainy from May to August.

Huanglong Scenic Area
Huanglong Valley or Huanglong Scenic Area is located in Songpan County in the northwest of Sichuan, 360km north-northwest of the capital Chengdu. Huanglong Valley is famous for its waterfalls, hot springs and colorful pools formed by calcite deposits. Huanglong Valley is also home to many endangered species including the Giant Panda and the Sichuan Golden Snub-nosed Monkey. Huanglong Valley was listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1992.

Huanglong Travel Guide

Huanglong in Chinese means "Yellow Dragon", is nestled at the foot of the Jade Peak of Xuebaoding, the main peak of Minshan Mountain Rang. The valley is 7.5 km long (in depth) and 2.5 km wide with an average altitude of 3550 meters. A panoramic view of Huanglong Valley from the top will reveal the valley a yellow dragon wriggling in the green mountain and the valley. The valley has a dense distribution of thousands of travertine colour-ponds, travertine flow streams and stalatite caves, featuring the world's largest, intact and unique karst landscape.

There are three ways of visiting the Huanglong Valley:
1. Walk up 5km on the boardwalks up to the Five-colour Lake and walk 5km down the boardwalks to the entrance.
2. First take the 5-8 minute cable car up to the platform called "Wanlong Ping", from which you walk 2km on the boardwalks to Five-color Lake. Then walk 5km down the boardwalks to the entrance.
3. Walk up 5km on the boardwalks up to the Five-colour Lake, then walk 2km on the boarddwalks to the cable car station at "Wanlong Ping", take 5-8 minute cable car down to the ground.

So the Five-color Lake is the utmost tip of the 7.2km long Huanglong Valley in the scenic area.
