Dongguan Travel Guide

Location:
Dongguan, a prefecture-level city of Guangdong province, is located in the mid-south of GuangDong province and east of the Pearl River estuary, Dongguan borders Guangzhou on the north and Shenzhen on the south.

History:
Dongguan is an ancient city with a long history which can be traced back to more than 5000 years ago.
It was in Humen, a town of Dongguan, that the event of Incineration of Opium took place, which opened a new chapter in china’s modern history. During the War of Resistance against Japan, Dongguan had been a base for the resistance forces in the East River Basin area, where thousands of Dongguan people fought bravely for and devoted their lives to the nation’s independence and prosperity.
Thanks to its long history and glorious revolutionary tradition, Dongguan has become a well-known historic and cultural city in south Guangdong.

Transportation:
Dongguan is a hub of communications of linking up two special zones in ear of grain and Hong Kong, two sides of the ZhuJiang River and Shenzhen, Zhuhai, the traffic is convenient.
The Guangzhou airport is just over an hour from the Dongguan city center. There is a shuttle bus to the Dongguan airport check-in station at the South China Mall in Wanjiang.
Hong Kong's Mass Transit Railway offers service (the former Kowloon-Canton Railway service) from Hung Hom Station in Hong Kong to Guangzhou with a stop in Dongguan.
The most popular method for Hong Kong locals to travel to Dongguan is by bus. There are several companies that offer bus travel to Dongguan from Hong Kong.

Hotels:
Accommodations are available at any price range in Dongguan. For those on a budget, several budget hotel chains have set up shop. Look for locations of the following brands: Home Inn, Jinjiang Inn, GreenTree Inn, 7 Days Inn, Motel 168, and City Inn.
Those looking for a little luxury might find the following four-stars a little more appealing; the Golden Lake Guangdong Hotel Dongguan, the Dynasty Hotel Dongguan, and the Metropolitan Hotel Dongguan, all of which are downtown. If you're all about the creature comforts of a five-star property, you'll find the Sheraton Hotel Dongguan, the Sunshine Hotel (beautiful, large outdoor swimming pool), the Richwood Garden Hotel (with a large poolside garden), and the Regal Palace Hotel Dongguan more befitting your needs.

Dining:
The diet in Dongguan is still primarily by the Cantonese cuisine. But the economical development has led the entire local prosperity, now not only can taste the Cantonese cuisine in Dongguan, but also can taste the Hunan cuisine, the Shandong cuisine, the Sichuan cuisine, the northeast cuisine and so on the domestic famous cuisine.
There are several streets which will provide you with a good dinner. The Garden New Village located in Huayuan Street of Dongcheng District boasts a great number of restaurants and snack-bars. Xinwan Street in Humen Town and Xinmin Street in Chang'an Town are also ideal places for seafood.

Nightlife:
Dongguan is sometimes called the paradise of nightlife. This is probably because most of the towns in Dongguan have their own amusement centers.
No matter what your tastes are, you can find restaurants, bars, clubs, and discos to appeal to everyone. 

Weather:
With an average annual temperature of 23.3 ℃ and an annual average rainfall of 2,042.6 mm, Dongguan has a pleasant mild climate and is rich in resources.
Resting mainly on hills and alluvial plains, which descends from east to west, the city is also partly surrounded by sea with its coastline reaching 115.98 kilometers (inland water routes included).

Attractions:

Keyuan Garden
Keyuan Garden, located at BoXia West Dongguan city, is one of the Four Great Gardens of Guangdong in China.
Keyuan Garden was built during the Qing Dynasty by Zhang JingXiu. Construction started in 1850 and was finished by 1858.
Keyuan Garden covers an area of 2,200 square meters. It features a tower, eleven pavilions, six terraces, five ponds, three bridges, nineteen halls and fifteen rooms, all of which are in grey bricks and most of which are named “Ke”. The tallest building is Ke Tower, as tall as 15.6 meters.


Opium War Museum
Built in 1985, the museum is located in Humen of Dongguan City in Guangdong Province. The Opium War Museum is a specialized museum of Chinese ancient site.
The museum consists of its headquarters, the Administration Department of Shajiao Fortress and the Administration Department of Weiyuan Fortress. It covers a total area of more than 200,000 square meters.
Tourists can go there to appreciate the ancient cannons and emplacements and recall the scene that Humen people fought against with the foreign invaders during the Opium Wars. What’s more, it is totally free of charge.



Yinxian Resort
The Yinxian Resort is situated in the Licheng Development Zone, 15 kilometers away from Dongguan City.
Unlike other historic sites, the Yinxian Resort also boasts many modern features. Here, the music fountain shows innovativeness. By employing different combinations of light and water, the fountain can show various forms.
Every day, there are more than five acrobatic and animal performances. What is more, the resort also provides barbecues for tourist groups; people could enjoy the delicious food while watching the excellent shows.
