Chengde is located 250 kilometers north-east to Beijing, surrounded by the Yunshan mountain range. It is a famous cultural city with about 300 years history, used to be the second political center in the Qing dynasty, with the largest extant royal garden in China. Main scenic spots: Mountain Summer Resort, Little Potala Palace and Puning Temple.
Mountain Summer Resort: The city if Chengde in Hebei Province used to be a summer resort for emperors in Qing Dynasty. It was the largest royal garden during that time. It is located about 250 kilometers northeast of Beijing. Over two hundred years ago Emperor Kang Xi (1662-1723) happened to find the place while making a hunting trip. It is said that it took 87 years to finish the building of a lavish and ancient palace. The palace is surrounded by a wall over ten kilometers long, meandering along the mountain ridges. It is the largest and best-preserved imperial palace outside of the capital Beijing.
The Eight Outer Temples: Lying outside the surrounding wall of the Mountain Summer Resort of Chengde, there are eight temples meandering along the mountians. There only 7 temples left intact. Located east of the resort are the Puren Temple, the Pule Temple and the Anyuan Temple. To its north is the Puning Temple. North of the Mountain Resort are the Xumifushouzhi Temple, the Putuozongchengzhi Temple and the Shuxiang Temple. These temples are arrayed around the Mountain Resort on the eastern and northern sides just like stars surrounding the moon in a semicircle. The Putuozongchengzhi is also called Little Potala Palace.
