My Trip to Yabuli Ski Resort

Now I'm walking towards the entrance to Yanbuli Ski Resort from Yabuli Ski South Railway Station. Before following me to Yabuli Ski Resort, I'd like to advise you of the basic knowlege of the ski resort.

The term "Yabuli Ski Resort" is a little misleading. Yabuli Ski Resort is the official name given to the biggest ski resort in China (Chinese: ) lying about 230km to the south-east of Harbin city and 130km to the west of Mudanjiang city. Actually Yabuli Ski Resort is composed of several ski resorts big or small with over 10 hotels ranging from basic guesthouse to luxury hotels. Among them there are three most well known ski grounds in Yabuli Ski Resort - Sun Mountain Ski Resort (Melco Ski Resort), Yabuli Ski Resort (same name as the official one for the whole area) and Avaunce (Yabuli) Ski Resort. Each ski resort has its own accommodation choices.

So you are clear of what Yabuli Ski Resort really means, let's move on. Though only 200 meters apart from Yabuli South Railway Station to the entrance, you are supposed to walk about 2.5km to get to Avaunce Ski Resort, 5km to Sun Mountain Ski Resort or Yabuli Ski Resort. That means both Sun Mountain Ski Resort and Yabuli Ski Resort are more than 5 km apart from Yabuli South Railway Station.

In the cold winter, it's almost impossible for you walk 5 km carrying your bags to your prearranged ski resort. No worry about that. Usually your hotel will arrange a shuttle bus meeting you at the train station. If your hotel doesn't offer shuttle service, you will easily find some big shuttle coaches running between various ski resorts and the train station just for a small amount of money. For an easy and comfortable transfer, you can prebook a private transfer service offered by local travel agecncies.

Well, we are now just in front of the entrace to Yabuli Ski Resort. The entrance is gateless, a just engraved rock indicating the name of Yabuli Ski Resort.


By the entrance lies a police station responsible for the ski resort.


A high quality highway leads to the three major ski resorts of Yabuli Ski Resort. I call the highway "Ski Highway", the main road connecting the resorts and hotels to the outside.


The Ski Highway is approx. 5km long. On the left side and in the middle of the highway is located Avaunce Ski Resort. Again along the left side of the highway from the entrance to the Avaunce Ski Resort located four 2-3 star hotels privately owned by the locals. These hotels offer 30-40 rooms with basic hotel facilities.

After passing the four hotels above, we are in the middle of the Ski Highway. On the left side of the midway is Avaunce Ski Resort; opposit Avaunce Ski Resort is the old Windmill Inn, a former hotel pioneer in Yabuli Ski Resor. Windmill Inn now looks very tired in comparison with the newly completed Sun Mountain Yabuli. Both Windmill Inn and Sun Mountain are managed by Melco. Though it looks shabby exteriorly for lack of renovation, Windmill Inn still receive tourists due to the fact that its interior spacious rooms modern facilities can make your stay in Yabuli easy and comfortable, especially for those smart price conscious tourists.




Avaunce (Yabuli) Ski Resort
Avaunce Ski Resort is smallest of the three major ski resorts in Yabuli Ski Resort. It is located in the middle of the way either to Sun and Mountain Ski Resort and Yabuli Ski Resort. Actually the ski trails at Avaunce are just built on the slopes of the hill in front of Avaunce Hotel.

The ski resort features two alpine ski slopes as well as a beginner's ski slope.

From the middle of the Ski Highway, a cement road branches off to Sun Mountain Ski Resort.
The cement road extends approx.2.5 km to Sun Mountain Yabuli.


Yabuli Sun Mountain Ski Resort (Melco Ski Resort)
Who is Yabuli Sun Mountain Resort? Why also called Melco Ski Resort? If the two names sound unfamiliar with you, but I'm sure you must know "Yabuli Windmill Resort". In July, 2007, the Yabuli Windmill Resort was purchased by Melco China Resorts ("MCR"), an associate of Melco International Development Limited ("Melco"). Now the Yabuli Windmill Resort has been renamed "Yabuli Sun Mountain Resort" (). Yabuli Sun Mountain Ski Resort is part of Yabuli Sun Mountain Resort.

The resort boasts of 17 ski runs, from beginner, intermediate, advanced and expert, coupled by many on-mountain entertainment activities, so there is always something for everyone at Yabuli Sun Mountain Ski Resort. New high-speed 8-passenger heated gondolas, full-leather 4-passenger heated VIP gondolas, and 6-passenger heated bubble chairlifts from POMA of America are the first of its kind to be introduced outside of Europe. The range of skis from Austria and snowboards from the USA further reflects the high standards of this international resort.

For most of skiers who do activities at Yabuli Sun Mountain Ski Resort, they prefer to stay overnight at Yabuli Sun Mountain Resort.
After touring the Sun Mountain Ski Resort, I walk another 2.5km to the middle of the Ski Highway. Then I again walk another 2.5km to Yabuli Ski Resort.

Yabuli Ski Resort ()
In the narrow sense definition, Yabuli Ski Resort here refers to the ski resort popularly called "Tiwei Ski Resort" literally meaning a ski resort owned and mananged by Heilongjiang Provincial Sports Administration. It is the only ski resort for professional ski training as well as for leisure skiing. The Yabuli Ski Resort is located on the higher mountains just next to Sun Mountain Resort. In February 2009 Yabuli Ski Resort hosted the Alpine, Nordic, and Freestyle Skiing events of the 2009 Winter Universiade. Student athletes from 44 countries competed in the games.

Yabuli Ski Resort has varied trails for skiers of all levels. There are primary, intermediate and advanced ski runs. Automatic and semiatomatic snowmaking system covers all the snow courses that are 12460 meters long with an area of 431800 square meters. People have the choices of taking cableways here including hanging cars, double lifts and sing lifts.

For most of skiers who do activities at Yabuli Ski Resort, they prefer to stay overnight at International Broadcast Center, or Hotel Yabuli Olympic Club, or Avaunce Yabuli.

After finsihing my inspection tour of Yabuli Ski Resort, I again walk another 5km back to Yabuli South Railway Station. On the west side of the train station located a village where I'm told that they offer basic lodging in the winter high season - Kang. The Kang bed is a sleeping platform widely seen in the villages of Northern China. It is a rectangular construction built on the ground of the room, and is usually located by a window. As its other name—Fire Kang—suggests, it is mainly a heated bed, which is indispensable in the rural areas of China during winter.
