St.Joseph抯 Cathedral

 This Catholic church stands on the site of one built by Louis Buglio in 1655, under the supervision of the Jesuit Fr.Verbiest, who had succeeded Adam Schall as minister of astronomy at the imperial court. The library of the church burned down in 1814,and Emperor Jiaqing seized the opportunity to have the whole church razed and the land confiscated.It was later rebuilt, but was destroyed by the Bosers in 1990. The present structure also known as the Dongtang or Eastern Cathedral, was erected by the French in 1905. Adjoining .it is a school,still called the Catholic school. In june 1988,I was taken on a tour of the cathedral after giving a talk to the students of an English class at the school. How to get there 74 wangfujing Dajie, Dongcheng District. |
