Site of Pingxingguan Campaign in Datong
Pingxingguan Campaign is famous in the history of China under the lead of Lin Biao and Nie Rongzhen. After the Anti-Japanese War was broke out, the Japanese invaders occupied Beiping (Toady’s Beijing City) and Tianjin, then they marched to Pingxingguan and Yanmenguan attempting to capture Taiyuan City.
Under the lead of Lin Biao and Nie Rongzhen, the Eighth Route Army hide on the cliffs of the northeast valley in the rain and successfully ambuscaded the main force of the Division of Banhuan and No.21 Bridge of the Japanese army on the next morning, seizing a lot of weapons, ammunition and military materials.
The victory of the Eighth Route Army at Pingxingguan severely dampened the pep of the Japanese army, and greatly encouraged the morale of the Chinese people.
Now the site of Pingxingguan Campaign is one of the hundred red-tour Scenic Spots, contains Memorial Hall of Pingxingguan Campaign, Cenotaph, Main Battlefield—Qiaogou, Inkosi Temple, the site of No.115 Division command post, the site of Lin Biao and Nie Rongzhen’s temporary habitation, the site of the pass of Pignxingguan, and so on. The site is full of thick forests and evergreen pinaster and cypress.
