Datong Volcano Cluster
Located in northeast of Datong City, and just three kilometers from the downtown area, the Volcano Cluster is the only area in North China where volcanoes are concentrated.
The volcano cluster is consisted of over 30 volcanoes in an area of some 60 square km distributing in East, West, South and North sections in Tatong City.
The volcanoes are generally shaped lie a taper of a hoof, while the craters are largely round or dustpan-shaped. The upper part of the volcanoes is precipitous, while the lower part is even. As the loess is transported to the hilltops by winds, the foothills are covered with thicker layers of loess while the hilltops are thinner. The bedrock and soil that surround the volcanoes are made from basalt and loess. The basalt and lava around the volcanoes are mixed together due to cyclical eruptive and idle periods.
Volcanic ejecta differ greatly in terms of shape and size. The scoria, block, pumice, lapilli, bomb and ash are arrange in order of distance: The light substances are discarded at a long distance while the heavier ones are cast in the vicinity.
Thereinto, the most famous ones are Heishan (Black Hill) about 1,422 meters above sea level, Jinshan (Golden Hill) about 1,368 meters above sea level, Langwoshan (Wolf’s Cote Hill) 1,028 meters above sea level. Jinshan (Golden Hill) with its full integranted configuration, is a top choice for visitors.
