The Three Gorges

The Three Gorges is a well-known scenic area along the Yangtze River in Hubei Province with a total length of approximately 200km. It has been an important historical and cultureal region in China.

The Three Gorges is consisted of Qutang Gorge, Wu Gorge, as well as Xiling Gorge.

Qutang Gorge is the shortest and most spectacular of the three gorges. The Qutang Gorge is only 8kms long, bult it is the narrowest. The widest point measures only 150 meters wide. The mountains on either side reach as high as 1,200 meters. This combination of narrow canyons among high mountains with several switchabaks in only 8 kilometers creats spectacular vistas.

Wu Gorge is the second gorge, formed by Wu River. It stretches 45km from Wushan to Guandukou, and is located downstream of Qutang Gorge and upstream of Xiling Gorge. Shennv Peak is the highlight of Wu Gorge. It is a individal megalith standing upright among groups, especially wreathed by rosy clouds and mist, as if a engaging girl. Every day, it is the first to greet with the sun, and the last to say goodbye with the afterglow.

Xiling Gorge is the most downstream of the three gorges, and in fact the dam itself is built into the Xiling Gorge. Xiling Gorge is located in Zigui County and Yiling District of Hubei Province, from Xiangxi down to the western suburbs of Yichang, and ist he largest and furthest downstream of the Three Gorges. The Xiling Gorge, around half the length of the three grorges, is acturally a seriies of four different gorges: Precious Sword, Horse Lung&Ox Liver, Souldless Bell, and Shadwo Play Gorges. Before the construction of the Three Gorges Dam and Gezhouba Dam, it was known for being the most dangerous of the three gorges to travel througth, with frightening whirlpools and strong rapids.

The grand Qutang Gorge, elegant Wu Gorge as well as danger Xiling Groge make up of the magnificnet picture in Three Gorges.
