Goodbye to the Former Residence of Family Chang, we are on the way to Qiao Family Courtyard now. It is my second visit to Qiao'Mansion. Qiao Family Courtyard is a world famous spot now. The fame of Qiao Family Courtyard is linked to the Chinese film director - Zhangyimou. Zhang Yimou is an internationally acclaimed Chinese filmmaker and one-time cinematographer. He made his directorial debut in 1987 with the film Red Sorghum. In 1992, he made a film named"Raise the Red Lanterns", nominated for Best Foreign Language Film Oscar. The film was shot in Qiao's Compound ( Qiao Family Courtyard ) not far from the ancient city of Pingyao, in Shanxi Province. From then on, Qiao Family Coutyard has been receiving hundreds and thousands of tourists all year round.
Qiao family were among many successful businessmen in Shanxi, who later spent their fortune to build the luxury courtyards with the traditional Chinese building art. It is located about 30 kilometers northeast of ancient city of Pingyao. It started during the reign of the Qing Dynasty's Emperor Qian Long and ended in the eighteenth century. it is a huge courtyard with 6 large courtyards and 19 smaller courtyards. The estate covers 9000 square meters with 313 rooms. Architects think it to be one of the refined existant examples of private residences in northern China. It has been turned into a folk museum.
