Pingyao is one of my favorite places. Last time I only spent 2 hours there. That's why this time I plan to stay one night at Pingyao to have more time to see, to touch and feel the ancient city.

Zhengjia Hotel
There are many inns and hotels within the ancient city wall. Zhengjia Hotel is my choice this time. It is a two-storey courtyard hotel, 3 star standard, managed by Family Zheng. It is located on the Yamen Road, close to the ancient County Government Office, in the southwest of the city. Later I find Zheng Family actually have two hotels ( or two parts ) in the same name opposite to each other. The taxi is not allowed to enter the city. Pingyao is divided into two parts - Ancient city ( within the city wall ) and the modern city. "Pingyao or the city" here refers to the ancient city of Pingyao. With a small luggage, I rent a local storage battery car to get to Zhengjia Hotel. Actually the car stops a few steps away from the hotel. Later I know that the Yamen Road where Zhengjia Hotel is located, is a pedestrian street, no running bikes or vehicles permitted. So within the city of Pingyao, autos are totally forbidden; storage battery cars and bikes are allowed in some streets; most of the Yamen Street, Nandajie Street, Beidajie Street, Xidajie Street and Dongdajie Street have been converted into pedestrian streets, which are the main five streets in the ancient city. Nandajie Street is often called Ming & Qing Street. Most of the storefronts retain the Ming and Qing styles.

















Yunjincheng Hotel
Before I come to Pingyao, I learn that there is a 5 star hotel in the ancient city, maybe the only five star hotel here. So after simple personal washing in my cozy room, I go out on the street looking for Yunjincheng Hotel. It is located on the Xidajie ( West Street ). It has over 60 rooms. All the rooms are built in two styles - modern standard rooms and Kang style rooms. The Kang is a long sleeping bed made of bricks or other kinds of fired clay. Its interior is hollow, liking to a flue which channels the exhaust from a wood or coal stove. The heat of the cooking fire could be used for maintaining comfort or heat when the weather becomes cold. Of course, what you will see is not a realy Kang bed rather a replica, giving you a kind of experience.




















Evening Show - Dance Drama of A Handful Wild Jujubes
Dance Drama of A Handful Wild Jujubes performs nightly at the Pingyao Yunjincheng Performance Hall. If you have bought the entrance ticket to Pingyao city, you are entitled to seeing the drama, otherwise you have to purchase the ticket. The two-hour performance is a well-choreographed, well-staged Chinese ballet, telling a vivid love story. It is worth the time or money to see it.
