Vsit the Former Residence of Family Chang

After touring Jinci Temple, I take the public bus back to Taiyuan Railway Station. Then I hire a taxi to go to the Former Residence of the Family Chang, about 40km southeast of Taiyuan. The Family Chang were one of the rich merchants in Shanxi, who developed their business during Ming and Qing dyansties. Some of the rich merchants built their houses generation by generation as a token of success and respect to their ancestors. The Chang's Mansion was the largest housing compound of all the mansions in Shanxi Province during that period. The Chang's Compound has been recently renovated and what you will see is only one forth of the original one. When you enter the main tower gate, you will find an one-kilometer long street. On the right side of the street are lined with over 10 courtyards! Each courtyards are different from each other. The whole compound consists of the stone roads, the grey streets decorated archways, quadrangles, stages and gardens. The place is immersed with history and culture. When you enter each courtyard of Chang's Compound, you will have the chance to see, touch and feel the brick, the wood and the stone sculptures. Looking carefully, you can find the inscriptions on these sculptures are adages verses, or patterns of flowers favored by the owners like plums, orchids and chrysanthemum. These sculptures manifest the cultural refinement and life interest of the house owner. They are regared as the most refined examples of the building art of the Qing Dynasty.
