Shanghai has over 1000 bus lines run by various bus companies such as Bashi, Dazhong, Guanzhong and Qiangsheng for the largest. The total bus number is daunting, putting people off. In Shanghai, unlike taxi and subway, public buses are not manageable though taking public bus is the safest and cheapest way of getting around in Shanghai. There are good reasons to keep from the bus due to the simple truth that it is difficult to navigate if you don't speak Chinese and aren't familiar with the city's myriad of bus lines.
Thinga are not as bad as it is if you do a bit of prior reseach and get to know some of the essential bus lines. Then you can get around in Shanghai quickly and cheaply.

Shanghai Bus Line Identification
The bus lines in Shanghai are classified either according to the numbers or Chinese characters.
♦ Conventional buses: Bus Number between 0 - 200 runing the regular downtown lines.
♦ Operated for rush-hour bus lines: Bus Numbers between 200 and 299
♦ Night buses: Bus Numbers between 300 and 399
♦ Huangpu river crossing buses: Bus Numbers between 400 and 499
♦ Special-line linking buses: Bus Numbers between 500 and 599
♦ Special-line buses in Pudong: Bus Numbers between 600 and 699
♦ Suburban conventional lines: Bus Numbers 700 and 799
♦ Special-line mid-size buses: 800 and 899
♦ Special-line full-size buses: 900 and 999

Shanghai Bus Fare
Normal buses usually charge RMB 1 and RMB 1.8 while air-conditioned buses charge 2 RMB. It is advisable that you get ready some coins or small notes with you since many buses have no conductors. You are requested to place the coins in the slot at the entrance to the bus. To avoid keeping coins with you, you are highly recommended to purchase a Transportation Card (Jiao Tong Ka). The card is available at subway station ticket kiosks. It works on a debit system. You put money into the card, and the balance is deducted as you use the card. The best part of the card is that it can be used when you take subway, taxi as well as buses. To buy a jiao tong card you go to the service center in any metro station. There will be a deposit of RMB 20 for the card and they only put in 80 if you pay RMB 100 for one card.

There are totally 10 tourism bus lines which all start from Shanghai Stadium covering all the major attractions in and around Shanghai. Each tourist bus line is actually one day round trip.
