They are passengers waiting for high speed trains in the railway station waiting area on the second floor ( F2 ) of the main building of the Shanghai Hongqiao Railway Station. 
 
Plan your Shanghai Tour? No matter you are arriving at Shanghai Hongqiao Railway Station or leaving from Shanghai Hongqiao Raiway Station, it is advisable to have some basic knowledge of its structure, functions and pubic transportation.
 
Shanghai Hongqiao Railway Station is part of the Hongqiao Tranportation Hub, the largest transportation hub in China, combining airport, railway, subway, city bus and long-distance bus. Shanghai Hongqiao Railway Station mainly operates the Beijing–Shanghai High Speed Rail, the Shanghai–Hangzhou High Speed Rail and the Shanghai–Nanjing Intercity High Speed Rail.
 
The construction of this huge station building follows the principle of “entering from the above and exiting from the below” Its main floors are simply listed below:
 
F3: Commercial floor for restaurants and shops and Vip lounge
F2: Departure floor as well as the station waiting area ( Also for ticketing offices )
F1: Platforms and tracks for outgoing and incoming bullet trains
B1: Arrival floor for train passengers, a huge traffic transit hub for subway, flight, taxi, city bus and long-distance bus. There are several ticket selling outlets on the B1 floor.
B2: Platforms for subway lines (subway line 2 & 10)
 
B2 Floor
The B2 floor is designed for subway platforms - Subway Line 2 and 10 linking the railway station with the center of Shanghai. If you want to go to Shanghai Hongqiao Railway Station by subway, you are advised to use Line 2 and Line 10 and get off at Hongqiao Railway Station and take the escalator up to the B1 floor ( arrival floor ), or continue to  the second floor ( F2 ), the waiting room for departure.
 
B2 Floor  is the departure floor for Subway Line 2 and Line 10, where you take an escalator up to B1, and F2.

After arriving at Hongqiao Railway Station, if you would like to use Shanghai subway, then you walk down the escalator from the F1 floor ( platform ) to the B1 floor (arrival floor), buying subway tickets on B1, again walk down to the B2 floor to connect Shanghai subway, either line 2 or line 10. 

B1 Floor
The B1 is arrival floor for train passengers, a huge traffic transit hub for subway, train, flight, taxi, city bus and long-distance bus. There are several ticket selling outlets on the B1 floor.
1.  To go to T1 of Hongqiao airport, you should take subway line 10 and get off at Hongqiao airport.
2.  To go to to T2 of Hongqiao airport, you can easily take a moving sideway for 10 minutes to get to T2 of Hongqiao Airport.
3.  To get to the city center of Shanghai, you should take subway line 2
4.  To get to Pudong airport, you should take subway line 2 ( about 1.4 hours )
5.  To get to Shanghai Railway Station, you should first take subway line 2 and interchange for Subway line 1 at the stop of People’s Square and get off at the stop of Shanghai Railway Station.

The B1 floor is mainly designed as the arrival floor for train passengers at Hongqiao Railway Station.

F1 Floor

First floor (F1) has totally 16 platforms with 30 tracks for outgoing and incoming bullet trains.

F2 Floor
The second floor( F2 ) of covers 10,000 square meters, used as the waiting room for the high-speed trains. You first wait on the second floor and look for the signboard for your train number. When it approaches the departure time for your train, passengers will line up before the signboard. When it is time for embarking, passengers will be guided to take the escalator down to the platform on the first floor (F1). So please wait on the second floor and look for your train number sign.

The third floor is for restaurants and shops and Vip lounge. The McDonald’s or KFC at T2 of the Hongqiao airport offer 24 hours service.  Hongqiao Train Station and T2 of Hongqiao airport are connected by a moving sideway, 15-minute walk.

Note: if you want to go to Terminal 1 of Shanghai Hongqiao International Airport, you should take subway line 10 and get off at Hongqiao Airport Station.

Remarks:

1.  All the left luggage offices are closed and out of service. Instead, there are 12 self-service baggage deposit areas on the second floor. The signs overhead pointing to Left Luggage (小件寄存) are no longer used. The instructuons on how to use the self-service baggage storage are all in Chinese.
 
If you cannot handle the self-service left luggage lockers. If you may turn to “Enquiry Counter” for help, which is located in the center of the waiting hall on the second floor.

2. If you need “Red Cap service” which assists seniors or people with too much luggage who need someone to take their luggage on to the train coach. Please go to the Enquiry (information center) in the middle of the waiting hall.

    I want to travel by train from Shanghai Hongqiao to Hangzhou at 8pm/8:30pm.
    Do you confirm it’s still possible to buy tickets at this time?
    If unfortunately it’s closed, how can I buy train tickets?
    (I’m a foriegner).

    No worry! Basically you can buy train tickets around 8:30pm since the ticketing offices are closed at 10:00pm. Ticketing office opening hours: 05:00am – 10:00pm.

    You may take the subway line 2 from the Bund to Hongqiao railway Station ( over one hour subway ride ). The nearest subway station to the Bund is “East Nanjing Road” Station (南京东路).

    Just take subway no.2 to go from Hongqiao to Pudong since the subway line 2 links the two airports.

    How to catch the shuttle bus between Hangqiao railway station to Shanghai pudog airport?
    Is it on B2 with the long distant buses?

    It is better to take subway line 2 directly from Hongqiao Railway Station to Pudong airport instead of buses. The subway ride takes about one and 40 minutes.

Can I only purchase them in the Shanghai Gongqiao Railway Station or can I buy them from the United States?     To buy your train tickets, you have to use your real name on your passort, just like buy a flight ticket.

    Yes, you can buy your high-speed train ticket at Shanghai Hongqiao Railway Station, or you can buy your ticket at Hong Kong, or even you can buy your ticket online before you arrival at Beijing or Hong kong.
