Shanghai Zhujiajiao Town
Belong to Qingpu District, Zhujiajiao Town is the best-preserved ancient water town among the four ancient towns in Shanghai with a history of 1700 years. In 1991, it was awarded the title of “famous cultural town in China” by the State Council. It is also famed as “Shanghai’s Venice” and “Hushang”
Villages and fairs first sprung up during the Three Kingdoms period about 1,700 years ago, and during the Wanli Region of the Ming Dynasty, it developed into this flourishing town, with a sizable population and booming businesses, so in Zhujiajiao Town, the traditional-style streets, markets and architecture of the Ming and Qing Dynasties are well preserved. There are nine long streets, 36 bridges and thousands of ancient houses.
Its beautiful waters, ancient bridges, odd streets and quiet lanes attract many tourists to come to visit. Walking on the zigzag stone pathway and the winding long lanes, you would feel like walking in an elegant and fresh painting. Aboard the black-awning skiffs floating along the canal, fishemen ply their hauls, while country girls in bright colors pick water chestnuts. Small rivers shaded by willow trees, bridges over the river, housed marked Ming and Qing Dynasties, unsophisticated local people, all of these are the charm of the small town.
