Shanghai Ancient City Wall
Old Chinese cities, including Shanghai, were surrounded by walls for protection. However, most of them were eliminated prior to the 1960s because they were inconvenient and hampered economic development. Along Dajing Road, Nanshi District, you will find a seat of Temple site and a section of city wall site, which is the preserved ancient city wall in Shanghai.
In the middle of Ming Dynast, Shanghai was an area of developed business and dense population. It was the center of the cargo from South and North as well as the ships along the river. The littoral in Jiangzhe area was still-hunted continually by enemy. Only from April to June in 1553, the enemies attacked the area to burn the houses, kill the locals for 5 times continuously, which made the extremely disastrous loss.
In order to protect the safety of the locals and property, the city wall was constructed just within three months. With a height of about 8 meters and circle of 4,500 meters, the city wall founded 6 city gates including Chaozong Gate (Big East Gate), Baodai Gate (Small East Gate), Kualong Gate (Big South Gate), Chaoyang Gate (Small South Gate), Yifeng Gate (West Gate), Yanhai Gate (North Gate). In addition, there are three water gates, 3,600 Battlements, and 2 Enemy Buildings. Thanks to the city wall, it kept enemies from invading the city. It was the city wall that protect the old Shanghai city.
