If you are going to visit the Hulunbuir Grassland, you are highly recommended to get a glimpse of Hulun Lake. Hulun Lake is located near the National Highway No.301 on the route from Hailar to Manzhouli. You can visit Hulun Lake either from Hailar or Manzhouli. The lake itself is under the jurisdiction of Manzhouli City, but it actually lies in the area surrounded by Manzhouli, New Barag Left Banner and New Barag Right Banner.

Hulun Lake is also known as Dalai Lake, the largest fresh water lake in Inner Mongolia and 5th largest in China. Hulun Lake is fed by two rivers – one is known as the Kelulun River, which runs from the west, and the other Orshun River, which runs from the south. The the Orshun River connects Hulun Lake and Beier Lake. Both the Hulunbuir Grassland and the Hulunbuir City are named after the two sister lakes – Hulun Lake and Beier Lake. The Beier Lake is owned both by Mongolia and China.

Hulun Lake has a shape of an irregular rectangle with an area of 2,339 square kilometers. The Hulun Lake is rich in fishes and waterfowl. There are various kinds of cash fish like carp, red fins, pike, catfish and rare white shrimp. The lake is a mecca for over 200 migrating bird species, including crane, gull, swan, wild goose, duck and lovebird.

The Hulun Lake is an ideal summer resort in terms of cool climate, beautiful scenery and fresh air. If you come here in summer, you are able to participate in many activities such as boating on the lake, fishing on the lake shore, sunbathing, bird watching. You can also have a bite of the local all-fish feast with numerous delicious and nourishing dishes of fish. If you come in winter, it is interesting to see how local people catch fish under the ice.

On the west of the Hulun Lake is the reception center for tourists traveling from afar. People can stay overnight on the grassland, having horse riding, watching the performances of wrestling and horse racing. In the evening, join in the bonfire party under the stary sky, singing and dancing. Life is so beautiful!

    Hi!
    Two of us are planning to visit Hulun Buir around 25-29 JUN and was wondering if you could help with some info,
    1) How do we go to the Lake from Hailar (or say from Golden Horde Tribe Area)? How long does it take and what will be the cost? Are private taxis available in Golden Horde Tribe Area?
    2) What are the accommodation arrangements near the lake? Or should we stay in Manzhouli?
    3) Is one day sufficient for the Lake and Manzhouli both?

  2. Daniel says:

    Dear Md. Asifuzzaman,

    To the Lake
    1) From Hailor over one hour by car and from Golden Horde Tribe Area about two hours by car;
    2) Suggest you hire a car or suv for the transportation;
    3) Try to contact a local travel agency or hotel for the transfer arrangement You need bargain and basically 500 – 800 yuan per day;
    4) No taxis available in Golden Horde Tribe Area;
    5) Some yurts around the lake;
    6) Basically you should stay at Manzhouli;
    7)It is all right to visit Manzhouli in the evening and next morning. Then afternoon visit the Lake and back to Hailar.

    Have a good time in Hulunbuir!
