Aoluguya Ewenki Ethnic Township is located in the forested mountains, 4km to the west of Genhe City, next to the National Highway No.301 and 255km to the northeast of Hailar. The township has a population of over 1450 people and among them there are over 200 Ewenki people. “Aoluguya” literally means “an area of dense forest” in Ewenki ( Evenki ) language. “Ewenki or Evenki” has the meaning of “people who live in forested mountains”.

Aoluguya Ewenki Ethnic Township occupies an area of 1767.2 square km. Its population is composed of six ethnic groups including Ewenki, Daur (Dawoer), Mongolian, Manchuria, Russian and Han. There are plentiful buildings in the Aoluguya Township – schools, a museum, Health Care Center, police station and old folks home.

Ewenki Ethnic people are a group of ancient minority with a long histry. They used to live and hunt in the forested mountains and live on hunting and raise reindeers. Now they have walked out of the deep forsted mountains on to the pastoral area and and the farmland. The historical study shows that in history there were three sub-groups of Ewenki people – Suolun, Tonggusi and Yukute. Suolun people belongs to farming tribes, Tonggusi nomadic tribes and Yukute is the famous tribe of Reindeer.

At the end of 1957, the name of the tribes of Ewenki people was recovered and unified as “Ewenki”. In 1965, the Ewenki people began to move from the forested mountains and settled down by the Aoluguya River. The Aoluguya’s local ecomony has developed from the single hunting or herding to the multi-economies including indutry, agriculture, animal husbandry, trade and commerce and tourism etc.

    HI,
Can I still see reindeer and families farming reindeer around here? I will be travelling to this area in early December and would love to spend time with a real farming reindeer family. Is this at all possible? Yes I know it will be very cold. I have travelled in northern China before in winter.
Or is there anywhere else you would suggest I travel to see reindeer. I am thinking of going to either Hailar and Manzhouli as well. Any suggestions welcome.
    Thanks Wendy

Hello, I was wondering if it would be possible to visit the Evenki in late March/April. Will there be anyone there during this time? I’m really interested in Evenki culture and would like to talk to the people there if it is possible.

    Thank you!

  3. Jemma says:

I was also wondering – is it possible to stay overnight?

  4. Daniel says:

    Hi Jemma,

Thanks for your inquiry! But this is only a model for tourism, not permited to stay overnight.

  5. Daniel says:

    Hi Jemma,

Basically, people would visit the Evenki from June to September. The period ( late March/April) is a bit too early to see the show and event.

  6. Md. Asifuzzaman says:

If there is no provision for staying, what will be the activities then? Just pass through?

  7. Daniel says:

    Dear Md. Asifuzzaman,

You can stay in an inn or hotel in Aoluguya Town.
