Chongqing is one of the four municipalities under direct administration by the central government (the other three being Beijing, Shanghai and Tianjin). Formerly part of Sichuan Province, it was separated from Sichuan Province and became a municipality 14 March 1997. It is possibly the world's largest municipality with a population of 31.4 million and an area of of 82,300 km².

When to Visit
Chongqing has a four-season humid subtropical climate with monsoonal influences. Chongqing is very hot summer being one of the "Three Furnaces" in China with temperatures over 40 °C. Chongqing's summers can be fiercely hot, so bring sunblock, but bring an umbrella too: heavy rain can fall at any time of the year.Winters are somewhat mild, but with many foggy days. Foggy weather is most prevalent during spring and winter days, hence the nickname of "the Fog Capital". The best time to visit Chongqing, for most people would choose spring and autumn.

Airports and Flights Chongqing Jiangbei Airport is 25km north of Chongqing. 30 minutes by taxi ( around RMB 100 ) and Airport Shuttle buses every half-hour from 6:00am to 6:00pm ( RMB 15 ) starting from Shangqing Si in the city center. Chongqing has daily Chongqing Flights to & from Beijing, Chengdu, Shanghai, Guangzhou, Chongqing, Xi'an, Xining, Kunming and more. It has also opened up international regular charter flights to Tokyo, Bangkok, Seoul.

Chongqing Train Stations and Train Service
There are several train stations in Chongqing. The two main train stations are Chongqing Train Station (popularly known as "Caiyuanba Train Station") and Chongqing North Train Station. There are daily Chongqing trains to & from Beijing, Xining, Lanzhou, Chengdu and Chongqing and more. The bullet trains from Chengdu use Chongqing North Railway Station, but many other trains still use the old Chongqing Railway Station (Caiyuanba Train Station).

Ferry Terminals in Chongqing
There are over 20 piers in Chongqing. Most of the luxury cruise ships dock at Chaotianmen Pier. The Chaotianmen Pier is the starting point of the downstream cruise, near the Jiefangbei, the most famous shopping center in the west China. Getting Around
The city boasts an established network of city transport, dozens of public bus routes run between 5:30am and 9:00pm. There are also numerous minibuses and other buses available. The starting fare for Chongqing taxis, for the first 3km is RMB5 and it is quite possible to get to any place in town for RMB20 by taxi.

Chongqing plans to build 9 lines and one ring before the year 2020. Now Subway 1, 2 and 3 are in operation. Subway Line 1 passes the city of Chongqing from east (Xiaoshizi) to west (Shapingba); Subway Line 2 from Jiaochangkou (near Liberation Monument) down south to Xinshancun and Subway Line 3 from Jiangbei Airport in the north to Ertang in the south. What to Buy
Chongqing is surrounded by mountains, there are many rare Chinese traditional herbal medicines in these parts including the rhizome of Chinese goldthread (huanglian), Gastrodia elata (tianma) and the bark of eucommia (duchong). The fertile land here is also ideal for the fruit growing, such as orange, pear, pomelo and persimmon.
Folk culture and traditional Chinese art compliment the modern offerings of Chongqing. Since the Southern Song Dynasty, Shu embroideries have been cited as one of the most famous embroideries in China. Chongqing's elaborate folding paper fans have been exported to foreign countries since the Qing Dynasty. The many various kinds of bamboo articles, brocade of Tujia minority and ink slabs from the Three Gorges also reflect the flavor of the local culture.
