Dajinsi Hutong, Da Jin Si Hutong Beijing

Plan your Beijing tours? A Beijing hutong tour is highly recommended to explore Beijing’s only remaining vernacular architecture – Hutong and Siheyuan.

Hutong (alley) and Siheyuan (courtyard) are the typical vernacular dwellings in Beijing. Its origin can date back to Yuan Dynasty ( 1271 – 1368 ) when massive city construction were carried out for the building of the capital city for the great empire in Chinese history.

With intensified Beijing’s urbanization, more and more hutongs and courtyards are disappearing from our eyes, replaced by uniform cement buildings. Some of the hutongs and courtyards are purchased and gentrified, losing their traditional architectural glory.

Hutongs and courtyards in Beijing are decreasing. Last October we went to Jia 33, Jinsi Hutong in Shichahai ( Houhai and Qianhai ) for a fam trip. We followed a rickshaw driver and visited a small courtyard in a famous hutong – Jinsi Hutong.
