History: Yan’an is one of the birthplaces of 5000-year Chinese civilization, which was a location of strategic importance for the Chinese empire and Tanguts of the Western Xia Dynasty. It was named the “the county of frontier”.
From 1935 to 1948, Yan’an performed as a basement of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China and the headquarter of the war of liberation. In Nov. 1996, Yan’an was authorized to be city-level by State Council.
Climate: Yan’an enjoys a continental monsoon climate which borders on a steppe climate. The annual mean temperature is about 9.9℃ Winter is cold, dry and long. Summer is hot and rainy. The monthly average temperature ranges from -5.5℃ in January to 23.1℃ in July. Yan’an receives 500 mm of precipitation and nearly 2,449 hours of bright sunshine per year.
Transportation: Air-Yan’an Airport is situated in the east of Yan’an downtown, mainly providing airlines to Xian, Taiyuan as well as Beijing.
Railway- Situated in the south of Yan’an Downtown, Yan’an Railway Station shuttles trains to Xian, Beijing, Ankang, Shenmu, Yuci, etc
Highway-The long-distance buses in Yan’an Coach Station mainly head for Xian, Yuci, Xianyang, Pingliang, Linfen, Lanzhou, Beijing, Yinchuang, Taiyuan, Baotou, etc.

Attractions: Pagoda Hill- With an altitude of 1135.5 meters, Pagoda Hill (宝塔山) is a good place for summer resort. The pagoda on the hill was built in Tang Dynasty originally. The present one was reconstructed in Ming Dynasty. The eight-square pagoda is 44 meters high and is considered as a symbol of Yan’an city.
Mausoleum of the Yellow Emperor- Situated in Huangling County, Yan’an City, Mausoleum of the Yellow Emperor (黄帝陵) is the burial site of the Chinese legendary Yellow Emperor. It is classified as AAAAA scenic area by the China National Tourism Administration. It contains over 60,000 mature cypress trees, of which 30,000 are more than 1,000 years old.
Yan’an Revolutionary Memorial Hall- Yan’an Revolutionary Memorial Hall is classified as a top-class museum to disseminate blazing revolutionary history from 1935 to 1948.climat
