History: In 110 BC, Wenchang belonged to Zibei County, Zhuya Prefecture. However, Zhuya Prefecture was annulled in 46 BC and Zibei County was abandoned then. In 607 AD, Wude County was established.
In 622, it was renamed Pingchang County and belonged to Yazhou Prefecture. In 627, Pingchang County was renamed Wenchang County and it was under the jurisdiction of Qiongzhou, Qiongzhou Prefecture, Guangdong province and Hainan Province successively.
On November 7, 1995, the State Council approved the revocation of Wenchang County and established Wenchang City (county-level cities). Its jurisdiction unchanged and it is directly belonged to the county-level city in Hainan Province.
Climate: Wenchang has a tropical monsoon island climate. Wenchang is annual frost-free with four distinct seasons. The annual average temperature is 23.9 ℃ and the annual accumulated temperature(average> 10 ℃) is 8474.3 ℃. The average annual sunshine is 1953.8 hours. The rainfall in Wenchang is abundant, but it was distributed unevenly. The rainy season are from May to October and the rainfall in these months accounts for 80% of the whole year. Wenchang City, the annual average humidity is 87%, the minimum humidity of 34%.
Transportation: Highway- Haiwen highway has a total length of 51.66 km. Wencheng is just 55 km away from Haikou Meilan International Airport. Wenchang City bus terminal is inter-provincial bus station. It has buses to cities and counties within the province and long-distance passenger flights to Guangdong every day. The city's road density of 0.88 km / sq. km, ranking the first in the province.
Railway- Hainan East Ring Railway passes Wenchang City and set two stations in its territory. The two stations are Wenchang Station and Fengjiawan Station. It takes you about 25 minutes to go to Haikou by train.
Waterway- Qinglan Port is a state-level open port. It is also a logistics base for Sansha City, Wenchang Space Launch Center launch vehicle transit port and the second largest fishing port in Hainan Island.

Attractions: Dongjiao Coconut Forest(东郊椰林) is located in the coast of Dongjiao Town, Wenchang City. It is one of the famous tourist attractions in Hainan Province. The coconut trees are standing in line and has many different species here, such as red coconut, green coconut, coconut of dwarf varieties, high coconut, water coconut and other species, a total of more than 50 million trees.
