As one of the seven mountains in the world, Tianshan Mountain (天山) is the largest hinterland in Eurasian Continent. It spans China, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan and Uzbekistan from east to west with a total length of 2,500 kms and an average width of 250kms from north to south. Tianshan Mountain is not only the greatest standalone mountain in the world but also the farthest mountain from ocean.
Tianshan Mountain runs from east to west, stretches 1,700kms inside China and occupies an area of 570,000 square kilometers, accounting for one-third of the whole Xinjiang province. Range of Tianshan mountain inside Chinese divided Xinjiang into two parts: Tarim Basin in the south and Jungar Basin in the north. Tomur peak, as the highest peak of the range, is 7435.3 meters above the sea level.
Xier river, Chu river and Yili river all originate from Tianshan Mountain. Tomur peak, Kalajun-Kurdish Ning, Bayanbulak and Bogda were applies for the World Natural Heritage on 21st, June, 2013.Tianshan mountain belongs to the younger mountain, about 1,200-2,000 years from today which is the outcome of crustal movement in the late of the Cenozoic Era.
Main Peaks
Bogda Peak
Bogda peak, with an altitude of 5,445 meters, is the famous peak in the east section of Tianshan mountain. The snow remains all the year above 3,800 meters, hence the name of “snow sea”.
Tomur Peak
Tomur Peak is close to the frontier between China and Kyrgyzstan with an altitude of 7443.8 meters. Tomur peak, as the first peak of Tianshan mountain, is listed as the national comprehensive nature reserve.
Khan Tengri Peak
Khan Tengri Peak is the second peak of Tianshan mountain, at the border between China and Kazakhstan. It neighbored Tomur peak in the east, Issyk-Kul basin inside Kyrgyzstan in the west, the Yili River valley floor in the north and the Akesu Oasis on the north edge of Tarim Basin in the south.
