We had an absolutely perfect day with our tour guide - Rogin Luo - who took us for a hike along The Great Wall! Didn't know what to expect and were thrilled to have him as our guide. Very imformative, knowledgable and fun! We go to experience a part of The Great Wall that was unrestored and see all its natural beauty. Got a long history lesson along the way!

After the hike, we all went to lunch at a small place at the bottom of the hill. Located in a house, we ate lunch in the proprietors bedroom! What a hoot! Rogin is the Best of the Best! This tour company delivered for us and we are extremely grateful.

Suzhou cuisine is one of the eight cuisines in China. With the development of thousands of years, Suzhou cuisine forms its own features such as light, fresh and sweet.

Local Cuisines

Squirrel Shaped Mandarin Fish
It is a well-known traditional dish in Suzhou. The Mandarin Fish is characterized by its lack of bones and the softness of its meat. The head of the fish, its mouth positioned wide open, and the tail bent upwards, gives the overall look of a squirrel. The fish is also cut into spikes resembling the fur. It is finished with shrimp, dried bamboo shoots and a sweet-and-sour sauce and thus the Squirrel-shaped Mandarin Fish is complete in color, shape, and flavor.

Suzhou Marinated Dried Bean Curd
Marinated Dried Bean Curd is a kind of famous special local products. It can be served both as dessert and as dish for simple meals or banquets. It features dark reddish brown color, special flavor and abundant gravy. It tastes fresh, sweet, soft and glutinous, embodying flavors of both gravy dish and candied fruit.  

Taihu Lake Whitebai

Just as the name implies, whitebait is white in color and it is a delicious dish after well prepared. Taihu Lake whitebait, some 10cm long, is famed for its white tender flesh and sparse bones.  Taihu Lake whitebait is nutritious for its protein, fat, carbohydrate, calcium, phosphorus, iron, vitamin B1&B2, etc. It can be made into various delicious dishes such as Fried Whitebaits&Eggs, Boiled Whitebaits&Eggs, Fried Whitebaits, etc.

Yangchenghu Lake Hairy Crab
Yangchenglu Lake Hairy Crab is known as one sort of the freshwater crab in China. It boasts the largest output as well as the most delicious taste. Steaming is the most classical way to cook the hairy crab, intended mainly to highlight the original flavor of the crab and preserve, to the utmost, its appearance, aroma and taste. Steamed crabs take on an orange color and taste fresh and delicious.

 In Suzhou, there are commonly two distinctions of Won Ton- Big Won Ton (dà hún dùn) and Small Won Ton (xiǎo hún dùn). The Big Won Ton are stuffed with pork meat and shepherd’s purse (a herb like plant). The Small Won Ton are stuffed with meat alone. The Won Ton wrap is very thin; half a kilo of flour wrap can produce 50 Big Won Tons or 70 Small Won Tons











Food Street

Gourmands will encounter various local snacks and time-honored brand restaurants in the popular food streets of Guanqian St. Taijian Lane, Shiquan St. Xueshi St. and Ganjiang Rd. etc. In addition, Suzhou Industry Park area is a good place to find foreign style restaurants, including Japanese, European and Southern Asian.

Guanqian Street
Guanqian Street is the most famous street in Suzhou, built in Qing Dynasty. You can find numerous of century-old shops along the street. The local cuisine on this street is the first choice for the visitor.

Shiquan Street
Shiquan Street is on the north of Blue Wave Pavilion. The celebrated Nanlin Restaurant and Suzhou Restaurant sit here.
