Sijing Collected Fine Drum(泗泾细锣鼓) is a Han folk music with distinctive features and it has a history of more than 300 years. It is an important part of Shanghai culture. For various reasons, Sijing Collected Fine Drum was disappeared since 1947. Then in the culture census in 1987, Sijing Collected Fine Drum was recovered. After the efforts of the town Party committee, related government departments, Songjiang non-material cultural heritage protection center and folk society, Sijing Collected Fine Drums was recovered and re-developed. What’s more important, Sijing Collected Fine Drums become the second batch of state-level non-material cultural heritage protection projects under the state council in June 2008.
The history of Sijing Collected Fine Drums can be dated back to ancient times. The ancient town Sijing formed a village in Song Dynasty and it was named Huibo Village then. In Yuan Dynasty, it became a town. In the late period of South Song Dynasty, the famous scholar Sun Daoming moved from the county to the north of Sijing town. In the beginning of Yuan Dynasty, Tao Zongyi live in seclusion in the south of Sijing. He always gathered together with many literati so that they left many great works. Since then, Sijing culture began to develop.
After the period of Qing Emperor Guangxu, population in Sijing Town increased and Han folk arts was rapidly developed. On Lantern Festival show, Tombs-sweeping Day village opera Dragon Boat Festival dragon boat race and the fifteenth day of the seventh lunar month temple fair, there are many drama teams playing various opera and music show.
The most distinctive artistic features of Sijing Collected Drum is the gong and drum. One artist should use several musical instruments during the performance. After beating the gong and drum, the artist can pick up traditional stringed and woodwind instruments to start his performance. The artist use the gong, drum and traditional stringed and woodwind instruments alternately. During the application of musical instruments, even on the same gong and drum, because of the difference of the way, stress and position of beat, can have different sounds.
Since the discovery of Sijinig Collected Fine Drums, there are performances every year. Sijing Collected Fine Drums gained a high evaluation in the last year and the year before last two session of Yangtze River delta Han folk music performance. Involved in these shows is Songjiang ancient folk band. This is a team of nearly 30 people, based on descendants of the original players, and absorbed the excellent folk music performers elsewhere in Songjiang.
