History: As one of the birthplaces of Chinese civilization, the Hohhot has a long history dating as far back as 100 B.C.. During the Warring States Period, the King of Zhaowu built the Great Wall at the foot of the Mt. Yinshan and established Yunzhong Shire, which is located at the present Tuoketuo County, southwest of Hohhot.
From Western Han Dynasty to the Northern and Southern Dynasty, Hohhot was named Shengle as the early capital of Tuoba Tribe, which rose in North China during that period. In 708, three cities in east, west and middle were built around the Hohhot. In the early 10th century, the Liao Dynasty set the Tiande army and Fengzhou County around Baita Village about 20 kilometers away from Hohhot.
In Ming Dynasty, a new city was built, 2 kilometers northeast of the old city. The old city and new city were known as “twin cities”, which were a common feature of the Manchu rule. In 1950, the People’s Republic of China established Guisui City. In 1954, the people’s government of Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region changed the Guisui City’s name to Hohhot city and set it as the capital of Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region.
Climate: With a Mongolia plateau continental climate, Hohhot has significant year and diurnal temperature rang. The annual average temperature is 6℃ and the annual average sun hours is 1,600 hours. It has four distinctive seasons: dry spring, hot summer, cool autumn and cold winter.
Transportation: Airline-Hohhot White Tower International Airport is the first great aviation hub, about 15km southeast of the downtown. The airport serves airlines laying over the whole country.
Railway-Hohhot city is along Beijing-Baotou railway, so the railway station is convenient. The Hohhot Railway Station, in the city center, offers trains to Beijing, Chengdu, Lanzhou, Tianjin, Harbin, Shenyang, Hangzhou, etc.
Highway-The advanced Hohhot-Baou (Jingbao) Highway has been put into operation, which serves long-distance buses through the western leagues and cities as well as Yinchuan, Lanzhou and so on.

Attractions: Dazhao Temple- Located in the south of the Hohhot old city, Dazhao Temple is the earliest Lama temple in Hohhot with a history of over 400 years. It is also named Silver Buddha Temple for the oblation of silver figure of Sakyamuni. There are three famous treasures in Dazhao Temple, namely, the silver Buddha figure, the dragon carvings, and the wall paintings. All of them are the historic treasures in Ming Dynasty with high art and appreciation values.
Five Pagoda Temple-Five Pagoda Temple is also know as “Diamond Throne Pagoda”, consisted of three parts: tower basement, diamond throne seat, peak of tower. The whole complex is 16-meter high. It contains a1563 images of Buddha carved into its walls each differing slightly to the other.
