Situated on South Avenue, the ancient Ming and Qing Street was the noisiest centre of business at that time. Located in the centre of Pingyao, the street is not very wide but with various shops orderly arranged along the road. These shops were all built with bricks and stones completely in the style of Ming and Qing architecture, which are all the prototypes of the ancient buildings and quite different from the imitation works now. In the past these shops involved all kinds of fields such as finance, medicine, silk, clothing, fans, lanterns and general merchandise. Now, although some shops have become museums, all retain their original appearance, making the street an excellent location to feel the ancient culture. It is also a place to buy some local souvenirs.
Wandering along the Ming and Qing Street, you can not only feel the atmosphere of the flourishing businesses formerly established but also appreciate the really ancient buildings designs. And do not miss the chance to taste the delicious local food, such as noodles, Wantuo, savory beef, etc.
Especially at night, the whole street is involved by the multicolored lights, more dreamily and warmer.
