It is a play embodying the commercial culture of Shanxi province, and spreading the spirit of Shanxi businessmen. Since it was played on, the play has been highly appreciated. The whole play is divided into 5 parts.



The Preface: At the end of Qing Dynasty, the disaster kept for several years. In order to survive, locals rushed toward Xikou, a place, to do business. The servant girl, Sour Jujube and the lad of Yin Family fell into love. Sour Jujube encouraged the boy learned to do business to change the fate. The lovers are reluctant to part at the foot of the ancient wall.

The First part: At the courtyard of Yin Family, locals are gathered to celebrate the retarded young master’s birthday. Suddenly, the boy begins to violently hit people around him. Sour Jujube was hit when she is attempting to stop the violence. With the injury, Sour Jujube misses her yound lover far from home.
Upon learning the news of Sour Jujube’s injury, the young lad is concerned about his apprenticeship and rushes back to visit the girl. However, the young girl, upset by the fact that he leaves business behind, drives him out of the door.

The Second part: The Yin Family has many stores with over a hundred years of history. The young lad learns the art of business with diligence and hard work and soon proves to be quite talented and skillful in managing business. As the moon shines bright in the sky, the young lad is lost in the dreamland where he and his love roam the wood of wild sour jujubes, vowing their deep love for each other.

The Third part: At the end of the year, the shopkeepers of all the Yin Family stores return with bountiful gifts. The young lad, however, brings back the account books of the store he manages showing huge amount of profits, much to everyone’s surprise. Overjoyed, Mrs. Yin appoints him the Chief Manager of all the stores. Sour Jujube presents her lover with an embroidered pouch filled with sour jujubes. Observing secretly on the side, the old lad stealthily puts poison into the pouch.

The Fourth part: At the brilliantly illuminated Yin Residence, Sour Jujube fiercely resists a wedding arranged for her and the retarded young master. Overcome by despair, Mrs. Yin passes away. Seeing the opportunity to seize the Yin Family fortune, the old lad attempts to force Sour Jujube to give in by revealing to her the dreadful truth that the is her biological father and that he has poisoned the pouch. Crushed by the old lad’s revelations, Sour Jujube goes insane.

The Fifth part: In the vast desert, long columns of camels approach slowly, loaded with wealth. The returning young lad who has by now amassed a large fortune encounters Sour Jujube who has undergone a great deal of suffering in the desert. But their reunion is not about to bring a happy ending to the story. As Sour Jujube lies dying on the desert floor, the young lad is overcome by enormous grief. The ancient road to Xikou witnesses a tragic conclusion to a beautiful love story.
