Tip 6: How to Get There

To get to the Shilinxia Scenic Area, you may take the public bus 852 ( Bus fare 16 yuan)) from Dongzhimen Transportation Hub for Pinggu District

The bus 25 keeps going the same direction where you come from with bus 852.  On the bus 25 you shouldn’t worry not to find the drop off 25. The bus takes a while to go there but at the end you will see when you have to get off.  You can pay the bus and it costs 5 yuan each person. You just have to drop the money into the box next the bus driver.

On the way back, just take the same 25 bus where you get off. To get off the bus you just have to pay attention when you are back in the city. You will see that and it’s the point where almost everybody leaves the bus. But you will recognize also where you have to get off when You see the “Chinese lanterns”  on the street light.

You may get off at stations no 7 and this is exactly where the bus hub is to take the bus no. 852. If you miss to get off at stop 7 from bus 25 you shouldn’t worry. Just take the next, or the next after. The bus stops really often on that big street. But than of course you have to stay on that street to take the bus 852.

  6. Hi pramuditha,

    1. Bus from Dongzhimen to Shilinxia 石林峡, the Gorge (glass sightseeing platform ): 96km, about 4-5 hours and bus fare 21 yuan
Personally I’ve no experience using the public transport going from Dongzhimen to the Gorge ( glass sightseeing platform ). The whole bus trip takes about 4 hours according to Baidu ( Chinese version of Google ). It’s too time-consuming.

First you take bus 852 from Dongzhimen and get off at the 15th stop of 平谷世纪广场站 ( Pinggu Century Square ) and then get on the Bus 25 from 平谷世纪广场站 ( Pinggu Century Square ) and get off at the 14 stop of 石林峡 (the Gorge for Glass sightseeing platform).

    2. Bus from the Gorge ( 石林峡 ) to Jingdong Karst Cave (京东大溶洞): 40 minutes; 8 km and bus fare 2 yuan
You again take the Bus 25 going from the Gorge and get off at the stop of Jingdong Kast Cave ( 京东大溶洞)

    3. Bus from the Cave to Dongzhimen Transportation Hub: 4-5 hours, 88km and 20 yuan
You first take the bus 25 from the Cave and get off at the 9th stop of Pinggu Fire Brigade (平谷消防队), then connect the Bus 852 and get off at the final stop of Dongzhimen Transport Hub.

You may ask why 4-5 hours for the single trip from Dongzhimen to the Gorge? I think it is due to the less frequency of Bus 25.

  7. Hi Kimeli,

There isn’t any online information on the architect behind this fascinating deck and the concept. If we find any information, we’ll let you know.

  8. Can I get a taxi from Gubei Water Town to Shilinxia and a taxi from Shilinxia to Pinggu District Bus Terminal to catch Bus 852 back to Dongzhimen? Cheers!

  9. Hi May,

You may take the local taxis or private cars. In your case, I suggest you arrange your own transport ( hire a car in advance ) because the local public transport is very tricky.

  10. Hi, I’m visiting Beijing this December. Is this place open at winter? Also how to get there from Wangfujin? What bus number and subway line we need to get there? Thanks!

  11. Hi Jessica,

Yes, it is open in winter.

It is a bit tricky to use the public bus syeterm ( no subway yet ) to get to Shilin Gorge for the glass sightseeing platform. To get to the Shilinxia Scenic Area ( Shilin Gorge ),you need take the public bus 852 or 918 from Dongzhimen Transportation Hub for Pinggu District.

Check out the link below for more information on Dongzhimen Transportation Hub:

Have a nice time in Beijing!

The Bus 852 is faster than Bus 918. Arriving at Pinggu District Bus Terminal, then you change for the local bus No.25 for the Pinggu Stone Forest Gorge or Valley ( Shilin Gorge – 石林峡).

  12. Hi, Is it possible to avoid cable car and climb by yourself?
If yes, how difficult is it? Thanks!

  13. Hi Lionel Mina,

The glass sightseeing platform is fixed at the place with the sea level of 800 meters. The walk up to the platform takes about 2-3 hours. Even if you take a cable car, you still need to walk for about half hour to get to the top. There are stone stepes leading up to the platform.

    Have a nice time!

  14. Hi Lionel Mina,

You can guess the engery you you need to walk for 2-3 hours up to the platform.

  22. hi, l want to go to the glass platform in shilinxia on may 19, this friday, and i wanted to be sure it is open for visitors.thank you for a quick replay, michal

  23. We just got back from Beijing few weeks ago. We went to Shilinxia on 11 May 2017 (Thursday). From our hotel (near Sichahai Line 8 Subway station) we took a bus 107 to Dongzhimen Transport Hub. Then we took bus 852 and stop at Ping Gu Shu Ji Guang Chang (平谷世纪广场)station.

We saw bus 25 passing by but not stopping at this stop. It made a left turn at the road intersection. Hence we had to cross the road and board the bus 25 at Da Shi Chang (大市场) (stop 9). Then we stop at Stop 25 Shilinxia (石林峡)。 Bus 25 is quite frequent. I think it is 5-10min once. Last bus to return to Pinggu is at 6pm. Total journey is around 2-2.5hr from Dongzhimen Transport hub. We got a good sleep throughout the journey. We passed by a lot of orchard, it must be a nice view we came earlier during blossom time.

Bus fare for return journey costs around 22 RMB when using transport card.
In most buses, there’re route info & station name (written in Mandarin and/or English). There’s also LED screen & voice notification mentioning the name of each stops upon arrival.

Entry fee is 78 RMB. Cable car for 1 way is 100RMB (200 RMB for return). Ticket to glass sightseeing platform is 40 RMB.

There’s 3 route to the peak. We took a wrong route that requires 3 hours hike (without cable car). After 30 min, we decided to turn back. Then we took a cable car up but then we had to hike steep stairs before reaching the peak. This is quite energy draining. Going back we took cable car at the other side and enjoy strolling along the gorge, river & waterfall area. Recommended route is the other way around.

  24. Hi, is UFO glass platform open around 12th August 2017? I am planning to visit there. It would be really great help to know if it is open or not. Thank you.

  25. Dear Sadhana,

Basically it should be open to the public except under the most extreme weather conditions.

  26. Hi 🙂

I’ll be in Beijing from 30 August until 02 September 2017 and would like to visit the glass platform on one of the days. It would be very appreciated for me if you could inform whether the platform is open for public access on these dates. As I understand, the return trip thereto takes the whole day, so I wouldn’t like to spend the day and be ultimately disappointed because of its closure for any reasons.

    Thanks)

  27. Dear Max,

As far as I know, the platform is open 30 August until 02 September 2017 except under extreme weather or something urgent. Basically it will be open. Good luck to you!

  38. hi daniel, you know what date they reopen in march and how much it cost me from downtown beijing car and guide or if there is any group tour. thanks

  39. Dear kamal,

We’ve learned that the glass sightseeing platform will be open in March, any day in March.

No join-in group to visit the platform. You’d have to use public transport ( not suggested, daunting ) or arrange your own transport – hire a car or with w guide, which will be very expensive.

Suggest you go with others to split the cost of private transport.

  40. Hello,

Is it possible to take a Taxi from Beijing to the glass platform? There is a big chance that we will stay in the centre of the City Beijing.

And is the bus trip complicated?

    Thanks in advance.

    Mohamed

  41. Dear Mohamed,

As far as I know, the the glass platform is closed during the winter season.

You’d better arrange your own transport or share with others to split the cost. Yes, the public transport is a bit complicated.
