Plan your Fujian Tulou Tour? Fujian Tulou are largely composed of the clay buildings in Yongding County and Nanjing County in the southwest Fujian Province.

The Nanjing Tulou Clusters boast of three parts – Tianluokeng Tulou Cluster, Yuchanglou and Taxia Village. Nanjing Tulou Cluster are about 160 km west of Xiamen, 2 hours’ drive from Xiamen.

Tianluokeng Tulou cluster (田螺坑土楼群)
Tianluokeng Tulou is the major Tulou cluster in Nanjing County,  about 160km west of Xiamen City. It takes about two hours’ drive from Xiamen along the bumpy and zigzag narrow mountain road.

Tianluokeng Tulou Cluster are composed of 5 clay buildings, with a square Tulou at the center and circled by 4 circular Tulous, forming a pretty pattern of so called “four dishes with one soup”.

Yuchanglou (裕昌楼)
Yuchanglou belongs to the tulou cluster in Nanjing Tulou Cluster. It is located  in Xiabanliao village in Nanjing. It is a five-storey clay built in 1308 Yuan dynasty by the Liu clan. It is one of the oldest and largest earthen building in China.

Yuchanglou is also nicknamed as the “leaning building”, because the vertical wooden post structure is not straight, but leaning left and right. It was constructed like this mainly due to a mistake in measuring the building material.

But in spite of this error, this tall tulou has survived for the past 700 hundred years. Yuchanglou is 36m in diameter and has five storeys, with 50 rooms on each floor.

 Taxia Village (塔下村)
After finishing the short visit to Yuchanglou, we drove along the mountain road and soon we entered the ancient Taxia Village. The ancient village is located in the west of Shuyang Town in Nanjing, a famous oversea Chinese town.

Taxia Village is one of the first 15 scenic villages selected in China. The village has a long history dating back to 1426. Now there are over 300 households in the village.

The clay buildings in Taxia Village are built evenly along the banks of the river passing through the village. The tulou buildings in the village have various kinds of shapes – circular, square and oval.  In addition, this village also has a kind of wood and brick buildings similar to those in the countrysides in Zhejiang.

Fuyulou Changdi Inn – Tulou Hotels & Inns

Plan your Fujian Tulou Tour? Do yo fancy an idea of staying overnight in a Hakka earth building? It is really an experience to stay in a clay building in one of the tulou clusters and enjoy the traditional life style which is fast dying out.

Many tulou buildings in Both Yongding County and Nanjing County provide basic accommodations by converting part of their clan houses into inns and hostels. Some of the owners do have much difficulty in communicating in English with considering the remote villages nestled in the mountainous areas.

Young people prefer to work and live in bigger cities such as in Xiamen, Fuzhou, Longuan or in the county of Yongding. But as far as I know one young man named Stephen Lin, a descendent of Lin Clan, sticks to his own dream by running an inn which has been converted from part of his clan house – Fuyulou, one of the Hongkeng Tulou Cluster into a cozy hostel.

Fuyulou Changdi Inn
He names his inn “Fuyulou Changdi Inn”. Fuyulou Changdi Inn is located in the side courtyard of Fuyulou. Fuyunlou Earth Building was built in 1880. It faces east and occupies and area of 4,000 square meters. It is a five-phoenix tulou building ( square in shape). It has three halls and four annexes on both sides.  The square clay building is located by the river, next to Kuijuloun, not far from the famous Zhengchenglou – the king of Tulou Buildings.

The left side of the Fuyulou Earth House has been converted into a cozy inn composed of over 20 rooms.  Some rooms have indepedent bathrooms. Some have shared bathroom facilities. All the rooms are basic and clean.  The local food is good and the food price is acceptable.  Get ready for the ear plugs if you are a light sleeper due to much echos inside old wooden house.

In peak season, Fuyulou Changdi Inn will be packed with travelers. Be sure to book in advance.

Plan your trip to Peitian Village?  The ancient Ming and Qing building complex in the Peitian Village is one of the three major kinds of vernacular Hakkak houses. The other two are Fujian Tulou (clay buildings) in Southwest Fujian and Weilong Wu (circled dragon houses) in Meizhou of east Guangdong Province.

The ancient Peitian Village is nestled in the mountainous areas by a river in Liancheng County of Longyan City in west Fujian Province. It lies 100km to the northeast of Longyan City and 300km northeast of Xiamen City. The Ming and Qing building cluster has been well preserved with a history of over 800 years.

The ancient building comlex includes 30 grand houses, 21 ancestral halls, 6 academies of classical learning, 2 memorial archways, and a 1000- meter long ancient street cobblestones paved road.

For more information on Peitian Village, please see my trip report on Peitian Village. For me, Peitian Village is more like an idyllic manor and it takes time to feel and digest to get its inner beauty. The traditional Wu’s Courtyard Hostel is another reason for you to stay longer in the village for appriciating its pristine charm.

Wu’s Courtyard Inn is a Wu Clan old house converted hostel with beautiful setting and comfortable rooms. The rooms are clean. The food is very appealing and the service is good. Staying in the old courtyard brings you back to the years in Ming and Qing Dyansties. You will feel and touch the Chinese History in the past 800 years.
