Plan your Xian tour? The city center of Xian is a very compact and walkable, and most of the places of interests are just a breeze from where you stay in the walled city.

As an ancient capital in China, Xian now still keeps the fortifications built in Ming Dynasty (1368 – 1644), one of the oldest and best preserved Chinese city walls. You may stay within the city wall or outside the city wall. But most traveler prefer to stay inside the old city wall. The wall measures 14 km in circumference, 12m in height, and 15–18m in width at the base.

The city layout within Xian City Wall is based on a grid pattern centrally denoted by the grand Bell Tower (钟楼), which levels out four main avenues clockwise: East avenue (Dong Dajie 东大街), South Avenue ( Nan Dajie 南大街), West Avenue  (Xi Dajie 西大街) and North Aevenue (Bei Dajie 北大街).  Xian Railway Station  is just located on the northeast corner of Xian city wall while Xian Airport is located 40km northwest of Xian.

Plan your Xian Tour? You may have one question: what to do in Xian after dark? You have some alternatives to relax yourself after a day’s trip to the cultural relics in Xian.

Like many big cities in China, Xian also has a street designed to house a groups of bars and cafes, which offer various drinking options for tourists and locals as well. The bar street is called Defuxiang Bar Street. “Defuxiang” literally means “Virtue Fortune Lane”.

Defuxiang Bar Street is located to the northwest of South Gate in Xian. It is walkable either from Bell Tower or South Gate. After three years’ expansion and renovation, Defuxiang Bar Street was open to visitors on March, 1995.

The bar street is about 200m long from north to south, rife with as many as over 20 bars and cafes. The bar street has a north entrance, which ia a 3-gate decorated arch while its south gate is a one-gate arch.

The 200m bar street is a hangout mainly for petty young people and tourists home and abroad. The common types of cars parking along the bar street tells the fact that most of the bar goers here are middle-class people.

Drinking prices here are comparatively lower than those in Beijing and Shanghai. For a glass of beer, you pay RMB15-30. Most of the bars are open till small hours. Basically if you sit there drinking, nobody will remind you to leave the bar.

Defuxiang Bar Street is very close to South Gate to the south,  Melody Hotel Xian and Citadines Xi’an Central to the north.

There are some good bars in other places, though they cannot from a-called bar street. So Defuxiang Bar is the only bar street in Xian at the moment.

A 3-gate decorated arch, the north entrance to Defuxiang Bar Street. The Defuxiang Bar Street has a cobble-stone road winding between two-storey buildings on both sides. The two-storey buildings are replicas of traditional Chinese and even Western architectures.

What to do in Xian after dark

I’m much impressed by the beautifully illuminated night views in Xian  during my short Xian Tour.  My pleasant surprise comes from my stereotyped impression that Xian is bare and grey after dark, a seeming match for its position as an ancient capital city.

Now Xian after dark feels like a paradise on earth with everything looking surreal, neon lit shops and streets, bright Bell Tower, fairy tale City Wall  and music fountain square etc.

If you are planning a Xian Tour  right now, please do add a night tour to your Xian travel list. Well,  follow me to touch the fairyland Xian after dark.

The lit Bell Tower

Don’t give a miss to the brightly lit Bell Tower after dark. Unlike a solemn landmark in daytime, it resembles a Tang dynasty beauty after dark.

North Square of Big Goose Pagoda

I went to the north square of the Big Goose Pagoda. It was said that the north square has the world’s largest music fountain in the world which starts at 8:00pm everyday. It was a shame that I had missed the music fountain performance since I arrived there at 8:30pm.

But I still got some feeling of the huge music fountain with the Big Goose Pagoda as the backdrop. It is really worth going there for a look. The just finished music fountain on the north square of Big Goose Pagoda.
