How to visit Chengde in One Day

Chengde Summer Resort
Get up early and have a fast breakfast, and board a local bus tour to Chengde Summer Resort. The Mountain Resort and Eight Outer Temples have been listed as the world cultural heritage sites by UNESCO. It is the must see attraction in Chengde.
Chengde Summer Resort is the largest existing imperial garden and also one of the top 10 scenic spots in China. Boasting the beauty of scenery in both north and south China, it covers an area of 5.64 million square meters, almost half of the urban area, twice that of the Summer Palace, and eight times that of Beihai Park in Beijing. This attraction is a vast complex of palaces and administrative constructions. It will take you around three hours in the summer resort.
 
Putuo Zongcheng Temple
After lunch, it is time for you to visit the outer temples around the Summer Resort. Since the time is limited, you can choose some famous temples to visit. Many travelers choose the Puotuo Zongcheng Temple as the alternate to the Polata Palace in Tibet, given the exact resemblance between the two. It is the largest temple of the Eight Outer Temples in Chengde City.
The Putuo Zongcheng temple complex covers a surface area of some 220,000 square meters. It stands in the north of the Chengde Mountain Resort in Chengde. The temple was modeled after the Potala Palace of Tibet, the old sanctuary of the Dalai Lama built a century earlier. Hence the Putuo Zongcheng has been nicknamed the “Little Potala Palace”.
 
Puning Temple
After visiting Putuo Zongcheng Temple, you can visit Puning Temple. The Puning Temple, or Temple of Universal Peace of Chengde is a Qing Dynasty era Buddhist temple complex built in 1755. As one of the eight outer temples in Chengde, Puning Temple is located near the Chengde Mountain Resort.
The front temple was constructed in the Chinese style, although the temple complex follows both Chinese and Tibetan architectural styles. The Puning Temple also houses the world’s tallest wooden sculpture of the Bodhisattva Avalokite? vara (22.28-meter-high and 110-ton), hence the Puning Temple is often nicknamed the “Big Buddha Temple”.
 
Pule Temple
Getting out from Puning Temple, you can walk to Pule Temple directly. Pule Temple is also one of the best known temples of the outer temples.
The Pule Temple is located on a hillock 1 km to the east of the Wulie River in the east of Mountain Resort of Chengde. Emperor Qianlong built the temple in 1766. The temple is made up of the front hall, side halls and the massacre city.
 
After visiting Pule temple, it is time to have supper. At night, you can watch some performances in Chengde Theatres or eat the local delicious food in the night markets. It’s all up to you.

Punning Temple in Chengde

Plan your Chengde Tour? Being close to Beijing, about 230 kilometers (140 miles) away, Chengde gained its prominence during the Qing Dynasty when the emperors built a palace where they spend their summer months when the heat in Beijing became unbearable. As one of the first famous historic and cultural cities of the nation, Chengde has plenty of sceneries.

Chengde Mountain Resort
The Mountain Resort in Chengde used to be a summer resort and hunting ground for emperors of the Qing Dynasty (1644-1911) is one of the four most famous Chinese gardens and one of the largest and best-preserved imperial palaces outside Beijing. It covers an area of 564 square meters, almost half of Chengde’s urban area.
It is enclosed by a wall 10,400 meters long. There are more than 100 buildings within the resort, which is divided into two sections: palace zone and garden zone. The summer resort and the surrounding temples were placed on the world cultural heritage list in 1994.

How to get there: Bus No.5, 7, 11, or 15 from Chengde Railway Station to the Mountain Resort, or take a taxi at a cost within CNY10 from anywhere of the downtown area of Chengde.
 
Eight Outer Temple
The Eight Outer Temples in Chengde actually refers to the historically existing 12 temples— the Boren Temple, Boshan Temple, Puning Temple, An’yuan Temple, Pule Temple, Puyou Temple, Putuozongcheng Temple, Guang’an Temple, Suxiang Temple, Luohan Hall (luohan, arahat in buddhist term), the temple for praying happiness and longevity and Kuixing Attic, but only 7 them are well preserved.
They are outside the palace walls of the Mountain Resort, to the north and west. Together with the Mountain Resort of Chengde, the Eight Outer Temples was made a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1994.

How to get there:
Bus No. 5 (which can be boarded either at Chengde Railway Station or at the Commuter Bus Hub Station) to the Mountain Resort of Chengde, then transfer to Bus No. 6 to the Eight Outer Temples.
 
Saihanba National Forest Park
With an average altitude of 1,400 meters, Saihanba national forest Park as a part of Mulan Paddock is an ideal place for touring, hunting and retreat from the hot summer days. It is located 200km northeast of Chengde. In this forest park with an area of 410,000 square kilometers, you will enjoy the vast expanse of grassland, the crystal-clear plateau lake as well as the historic interests left in the Qing Dynasty.
This park is blessed with boundless grasslands and large forest. The eco-system is well preserved here, thus you can enjoy the most charming natural landscape in the park.

How to get there:
After get off at Siheyong Station, take the minibus to Weichang County (or directly rent a car), then take the regular bus to the Saihanba National Forest Park at County Bus Station.
 
Puning Temple
The Puning Temple is one of the famous Eight Outer Temples in Chengde City. The Puning Temple is of grand scale, occupying an area of more than 23,000 square meters. The temple is also called Big Buddha Temple because of the big Buddha in it.
statue, 21.85 meters in height and 110 tons in weight, is carved out of wood and plated with gold. It sits on a locus throne of 2.22 meters high. The statue has 42 hands, two of which clamp together and the rest with different musical instruments in them. The statue, with its dignified manner, is one of the famous large-scale wood-carved Buddha statues in China.

Take Bus No.6 to the Puning Temple, or take a taxi at a cost within CNY10 from the downtown area of Chengde.
 
Mulan Hunting Paddock
Mulan Hunting Paddock, which was built in the 20th year of Emperor Kangxi’s region (1681), is a rare natural grassland resort in Hebei Province covering an area of 2,324 square kilometers. It is about 200km northeast of Chengde.
Mulan Paddock is covered with 1,658kms grassland. It has majestic mountains, gorgeous scenery and delightful weather. It boasts plenty of water, lush grass, flock of birds and packs of animals, an ideal place for hunting. The period from June through September is the best time to visit

From Chengde, catch a bus at Dehui Gate head for Paddock County; or catch a train, get off at the Siheyong Station; or rent a taxi.
 
Fengning Grassland
Fengning Grassland, also called Fengning Bashang Grassland is a nearest natural rich grasslands next to the capital Beijing, some 280km away. That’s why it called No.1 grassland in northern Beijing. It is a great summer holiday resort for for escaping the hot summer sun.
The grassland is situated above the dam on a vast plateau covered with green grasses and wild flowers, Flocks and herds are everywhere where many of the colorful locals can be seen tending their stock in the fields.
