Top 10 Attractions in Dandong

If you are not willing to venture taking Beijing North Korea tour, but still want to have a glimpse of the hermit state of North Korea,  a short trip to Dandong is a good alternative.  Separated by Yalu River, Dandong is a border city opposite to  Sinuiju, North Korea.   For more information on Datong, check out the link : Dantong tour.

Dandong can be easily reached from Beijing by taking the overnight train T 27  for Dandong  which takes about 14 hours. or you may bus from Shenyang or Dalian.

Dandong offers a good choices of accommodation including the luxury stay at Wanda Realm Dandong and Crowne Plaza Hotel Dandong.  For cheaper hotels,  you may choose Chinese chain hotels – Home Inn, Huating Express and 7 Days Inn.

For drinking and beverage,  Peter’s Coffee House is highly recommended which is run by a Canadian family who have stayed in Dandong for a long time. Beside coffee, Peters also serve up a  good all day breakfast, burgers and sandwiches.

Traveling around the city of Dandong is easy and comfortable, a pedestrian friendly city. Taxi rides are cheaper and convenient.

1. Yalu River  Park 鸭绿江公园
South of downtown Dandong, Yalu River Park is about 3.4km long with boardwalk along Yalu River. It is a comfortable stroll along the boardwalk in the park. Lots of activities are going on in the park,especially during summer time. You may see the border area of North Korea from here and take boats to have a closer look.

Having a picnic in the park is a great way to spend your day; Browsing souvenirs from North Korea (North Korean postage stamps & currency notes):  Renting Korean dresses to take photographs, and buy snacks; tasting authentic North Korean food and the list could be much longer.

2. Yalu River Broken Bridge  鸭绿江断桥
The “Broken Bridge” is the first bridge ever built over Yalu River.  It was constructed between August 1909 and October 1911, an iron bridge, 944.2 meters long, 11 meters wide with 12 arches.

In December,  1950, the bridge was bombed by US Air Force during the Korean War. The bridge has been left less than halfway cross the river from Chinese riverside, hence the name of Duanqiao ( Broken Bridge).

Now it has become an intriguing sight in Dandong.  You can stroll along the Broken Bridge, feeling the Korean War by looking at the bullet and shell holes and bomb-damaged remains.

3. China and North Korea Friendship Bridge 鸭绿江桥(中朝友谊桥)
About 100 meters on the upper reaches of the Broken Bridge is the second bridge on Yalu River, now also known as China and North Korea Friendship Bridge. The built was originally built between April, 1937 and 1943.  The bridge is 940.8 meters long with 569.9 meters on China’s side.

Several over-all renovation and repairs have been done to make the bridge both stronger and supportive. The bridge is the official border crossing  between China and North Korea. Now tourists can walk through the bridge to enter North Korea for sightseeing. No photos on the bridge.

4. North Korean Border at Dandong  朝鲜边境
So Dandong is within a toss of a baseball to the North Korean shoreline.  A glimpse of the stark shoreline is one of the purposes of many tourists who make trips to Dandong.  The stark and sharp difference between the two shorelines of China and North Korea is quite interesting.

There are two ways for having a glimpse of the North Korean Border.  One is standing on the Hushan Mountain (Tiger Great Wall ) where you can have an-eye bird view of the river the shoreline. The other is to take the speed boat from the pier at the foot of Hushan Mountain.  The 30-minute boat ride allows you to come very closer to the North Korea’s Border.

5. Anti-US Aggression & Supporting Korea Memorial 抗美援朝纪念馆
The memorial was inaugurated in 1958 and renovated and expanded in 1984.  The whole memorial comprises three principal buildings – the Memorial Pagoda, the Exhibition Hall and the  life-sized Diorama Hall.  The  Exhibition Hall has 10 show rooms displaying over 500 valuable pictures and 1000 artifacts, reproducing the magnificent scene of the War.

The Diorama Hall  is 24 meters high with a diameter of 44 meters, using the comprehensive modern technology to depict the war scenes.  The museum shows the war from Chinese perspective.

The museum is located on the foot of the west Jinjiang Mountain. Taxi ride to the museum costs about RMB 10 from downtown,or you may visit the museum on your walk to Jinjiang Mountain.

6. Jinjiangshan Park 锦江山公园
The pleasant Jinjiang Park is named after the same name mountain – Jinjiang Mountain. The park is on the south slope of Jinjiang Mountain,  the largest comprehensive park in Dandong, a well-tended expanse of forested slopes.

On the top of the mountain is the Jinjiang Pagoda. The park  is free to the public.  On the park, you can see people doing lots of activities. There is a pond and a small zoo in the park. It has an entertainment area for kids and it is the ideal venue for a family outing or for lovers. Standing on the top, you can have an unparalleld views of the whole Dandong and Sinuiju in North Korea.

7. Tiger Mountain Great Wall 虎山长城
Tiger Great Wall is named after the same name Tiger Mountain ( Hushan Mountain ).  It is located by the Yalu River, opposite to the North Kore’s Yuce Island and the old Shinuiju, about 15km  to the east of Dandong’s city center.

Tiger Great Wall is a restored stretch of the Wall with a length of 1250 meters with a sea level of 146.3 meters.  Tiger Great Wall was built in 1469, often regarded as the eastern tip  the Great Wall built in Ming Dynasty. In the scenic area, there is a Great Wall Museum – Tiger Great Wall Museum,  one of the four Great Wall Museums in China.

8. Wulong Mountain 五龙山
Wulong Mountain ( Five Dragons Mountain ) is located 17 to the northwest of Dandong’s City center with its main peak at the sea-level of 708.5 meters.  You may take a taxi ( RMB about 35 ) or mini-bus (RMB7) from the train station.

Once arriving at the entrance, you may take the local mini-bus or you may hire a car directly drive to the top. Alternatively, it is a 2-km walk from the entrance to the top. Walking uphill is very interesting,  and the pathway brings many scenic spots to you. On the top is the famous Lingchan Buddhist Temple, the largest temple in the northeast China.

9. Phoenix Mountain凤凰山
Phoenix Mountain is one of the four famous mountains in Liaoning Province, 57km to the northwest of Dandong’s city center. In Tang Dynasty, Emperor Li Shimin visited the mountain and named it “Phoenix Mountain” according to the legend of “Phoenix Paying Respect to Ancestors”.

Phoenix Mountain is well known both for its natural landscape and religious culture. It is an intriguing place where Buddhism and Taoism go hand in hand and live peacefully. You could find many Taoist temples  and Buddhist temples.

10. Dalu Island 大鹿岛
Dalu Island is the largest island off the northern tip of the coastline in China. Dalu Island is 9 nautical miles off Gushan Township, about 92 km to the southwest of Dandong’s city center.

Now Dalu Island is well developed like  a city on the sea with good accommodation facilities. It boasts a fine natural beach. It is a good getaway ffom the hubbub of the downtown Dandong.

Plan your Shenyang tour?  Shenyang,  the capital city of Liaoning Province,  boasts its own Forbidden City,  imperial tombs, resourceful museums and several  parks as well as impressive mountains.

I’ve rounded up the Top 10 Attractions in Shenyang for you to prepare for your  stopover on your trip  to Shenyang.

1. Shenyang Imperial Palace 故宫
Shenyang Imperial Palace is the main draw in Shenyang,  the magnificent palace resembles a smaller Forbidden City in Beijing.  It is located in the center of the old Ming and Qing city in Shenhe District of Shenyang.

The palace complex represents the highest level art of early Manchu palace architectures and Manchu’s unique history and culture in the early stage.

Shenyang Forbidden City was built  between 1625 and 1636. It was the residential palace of Manchu emperor Nurhachi (1559 – 1626) and his son, Huang Taiji. It was used by Manchu rulers until 1644.

After Manchu took over Beijing and established Qing Dynasty,  Shenyang Imperial Palace served as the temporary imperial palace for brief stay when Qing emperors came to the northeastern China for inspection or paying tribute to their ancestors.

In  1926, Shenyang Imperial Palace Museum was built based on the former imperial palace.  Now it has become a famous imperial palace museum with historical art value.

2. North Tomb (Zhaoling Tomb)  北陵 (昭陵)
Zhao Ling ( Luminous Tomb )  is the burial site of the founder of Qing Dynasty – Huang Taiji (1592 – 1643).  The tomb is located in the north of the old city of Shenyang, hence the name of North Tomb ( Beiling 北陵).

Beiling Tomb ( North Tomb ) area has turned into a modern landscape park ( Beiling Park ) coupled with imperial tombs. The tomb occupies an area of 160,000 square meters, the largest imperial tomb outside Beijing in Qing Dynasty.

The tomb’s animal statues lead up to a mound where the emperor and his empress were buried. The traditional architectures and ornamentation around tomb  site are magnificent.

Beiling Park is a good place to escape from the hustle-bustle of  Shenyang’s downtown.  The park is rife with pine trees, endowed with  a large lake  featuring with paddle boats and canoes for hire, bicycles for rental, food and snack vendors etc. Local residents come here to sing, play and picnic.

3. East Tomb (Fuling Tomb) 东陵 ( 福陵)
Fuling Tomb is  the burial site of  Manchu emperor Nurhachi (1559 – 1626) and his empress .  The tomb is located in the east of Shenyang’s old city, hence the name of East Tomb. Fuling was constructed between 1626 and 1651.

It was later renovated and enlarged in the reign of Emperor Kangxi and Qianlong. Confronted by Hun River and a backdrop of Tianzhu Mountain, the imperial tomb is surrounded by the mountain and river, deep grass and dense forest with quiet  and beautiful environment.

From the entrance to the pailou, people need to climb 108 stone steps. East Tomb is smaller than Beijing ( North Tomb ) . But it is well tended with ancient tall trees.

Now Dongling ( East Tomb ) has been turned into a modern park where urban residents come here to rewind themselves by playing,  singing and dancing. Fuling Tomb is not only an l Chinese emperors’ tomb, but also is the best eyewitness to Chinese history and culture.

4. Former Residence of Zhang Zuolin and Zhang Xueliang 张氏帅府 (大帅府)
Zhang Zuolin (1875–1928) was the warlord of Manchuria from 1916 to 1928. He was killed by a bomb planted by a Japanese Kwantung Army officer on 4 June 1928.

Zhang Xueliang  ( 1901 –  2001 ) was the actual ruler of Manchuria and much of northern China after the assassination of his father, Zhang Zuolin, by the Japanese 1928. As an advocate of the Xi’an Incident, he spent over fifty years under house arrest  in Taiwan. He is reputed as a patriotic hero in China.

Their residence compound is mainly divided into two parts – the old East Yard and the later West Yard.  The East Yard is the earlier buildings of their residence with courtyards,  Xiao Qing Lou, Daqinglou, Guandi Temple and Ms Zhao’s House outside the east wall. The West Yard was the later buildings of western style. You will visit Zhang Zuolin’s living room and Zhan Xueliang’s office room.

5. “9.18”History Museum 九一八历史博物馆
The September 18 History Museum is built to remind people of the date September 18, 1931 when the Japanese aggressors invaded the Northeastern China.

The museum was built between 1997 and 1999. It was opened to the public on September 18,1999. The museum has a total exhibition area of 9180 square meters. It has 8 exhibition halls and over 10 large backgrounds for displaying historical events.

6. Liaoning Provincial  Museum 辽宁省博物馆
Liaoning Provincial Museum is the first museum after 1949 in New China.  It was established in 1949 based on the former residence of the warlord Tang Yuling.

Shenyang Provincial Museum has a total number of 115,000 pieces of exhibits dating back to the prehistoric times through the late Qing Dynasty.  Many of the artifacts are unearthed from Liaoning Province including calligraphy,  paintings, carvings, ceramics,  decorations,  copper wares,  coins, lacquer wares and the list could be much longer.

7. Zhongjie Pedestrian Street 中街步行街
Zhongjie Pedestrian Street is a vehicle-free commercial street, 1500 meters long, the earliest shopping street in Shenyang  and the first walking street in China.

It was inaugurated in 1625 when Manchu moved its capital to Shenyang.  Now Zhongjie Pedestrian Street is packed with shopping malls, department stores, restaurants. Scattered in the alleys along the street  you can find numerous  free markets offering a great variety of goods.

8. Shenyang Strange Slope Scenic Area 沈阳怪坡
Shenyang Strange Slope Scenic Area is located 30km to the northeast of Shenyang’ city center.

The weird and unnatural slope is 80 meters long, 15 meters wide with its east side tilting to the lower west. When you bike from the lower west end to the high east side, you feel much easier than you do it vice versa – biking down from the higher east to the lower west, hence the name of “Strange Slope”.

This strange phenomenon has attracted the attention of experts, celebrities and scholars who try to open the mystery. Some people say it is because of the function of magnet, others say the movement of gravity or eyesight difference. But nobody gives a perfect answer. The result is a large scenic park has been formed due to the fame of the slope.

The strange slope park now comprises the slope as well as the nearby mountains, rivers and ma-made sights with a total of over 20 attractions of various themes.

9. Shenyang International Horticultural Expo Garden 沈阳世博园
Shenyang Expo Garden is located 18km to the northeast of Shenyang’ city center.  This is the place when the World Horticultural Expo was held in 2006. The expo garden has an area of 246 acres  featuring 53 domestic exhibition gardens,  23 international gardens and 24 special gardens.

Now the expo garden is mainly divided into two areas – Horticultural Area  and Leisure Area. These elaborate gardens have plants and flowers from almost all the regions of the country and some from overseas.

10. Shenyang Qipan Mountain 棋盘山
Shenyang Qipan Mountain is situated 20km to the northeast of Shenyang’s city center. Its  fame was mainly due to the Women’s World Chess Championship once held here.  It is said that the immortals – Lv Dongbin and Tieguai Li once played chess hers, hence the name of the mountain “Qipan”which literally means “Chessboard”.

Shenyang Qipan Mountain Scenic Area is a combination of nature and history, the largest natural landscape featuring undulating mountains,  winding creeks, dense forest, singing birds and fragrant flowers.  Come here spring for the green, summer for the scenery, autumn for the maple trees and winter for the snow.

Laohutan Ocean Park
Situated in the central part of the southern seashore of

Danlian Laohutan Ocean Park also boats of a Coralarium, the largest sea creatures park with coral reefs existing in their natural habitat; Polar Region Marine Animals World, the only exhibition of its type in China; World of Birds, the largest manmade birdcage in China as well as the Tigers Sculpture Square which is the symbol of Laohutan Ocean Park.

Lushun, popularly known as “Port Arthur” is located in the west end of

Jinshitan Scenic Area
Jinshitan Scenic Area is located at the shore of Huanghai Sea, 58 km away from downtown
Dalian. Occupying a land area of 62 square km with a coastline of 29.8 km, Jinshatan is the largest state-level holiday resort in China, and also the only one in the northeast.
Notable for its geologic features, Jinshitan Scenic Area in Dalian has the prestige of being a “paradise for gentlemen”. Encircled by the sea, Jinshitan Scenic Area has not only fresh air, clean sea water, sunshine and a spacious beach, but also has a top golf course, international yacht club as well as swaths of gameland.

Xinghai Park
Xinghai Park, situated in the southwest of
Dalian, is one of the popular parks in the city. The park boasts of a 0.15 million-square-meter garden and a man-made beach. Dalian Xinghai Park is also home to the Sun Asia Ocean World and ocean Amusement Park where you can observe many of the often bizarre creatures that live in the sea.
The 800 meter long and 30 meter man made beach of Xinghai Park in Dalian is the primary highlight of the park. The bow shaped bathing beach is an ideal summer playground and allows you to enjoy a wide array of water related sports and activities.

Bingyu Valley Scenic Area
Covering an area of 110 square kilometers, the Bingyu Valley Scenic Area is located in northern Zhuanghe City, 240 kilometers distant from 
Dalian City. It is an AAAA national tourist resort, renowned as ‘Oriental Miniature Switzerland’. Unique lava landforms, natural pinewood and deep valleys are rare sights that can be found in this region.
In addition, Bingyu Valley Scenic Area is home to over 200 varieties of flora and fauna. The Blue Mountains hide pools of green water, forming a natural scenic view, giving it the reputation of “Little Guilin”. Dalian Forest Zoo
Dalian Forest Zoo, an amazingly extensive animal kingdom, is built in 1997, covering an area of 7.2 square kilometers. It is well-known for its high quality selection of species and wild raising. Dalian Forest Zoo takes special consideration to maintain the balance between its theme of naturalness and wildness and the human and cultural factors.
The Dalian Forest Zoo is a nice park and a good choice to spend a day with kids. The Zoo is divided in two parts, a northern and southern part connected by a cable car. The ride with the cable car is free if you hold a zoo ticket. Alternaively you can do a 30-50 minute hike around the hill.

Binhai Road
Dalian Bin Hai Road stretches along Dalian’s famous coastline and is a sightseeing must for visitors to the area. The 35-kilometer-long road borders Xing Hai Square in the west and Dong Hai Park in the east. One side of the road features mountainous areas covered with forests while the opposite side reveals the panoramic coastline and sea.
Due to the clear, fresh air and the sea, locals have nicknamed the road the “natural oxygen bar.” Tourist facilities dot the road, such as Bang Zhui Island, Hu Tan Paradise, Xiu Yue Hotel, Fu Jia Zhuang Outdoor Bathing Place and Hai Tian Bai Yun Hotel.

How to get there: There are four entrances for Binhai Road: Xinghai Square entrance, Fujiazhuang entrance, Laohu Beach entrance and Bangchuidao entrance, you can take a taxi to any entrance you like.
