A large American flag behind him and a friendly audience of old friends and extended family in front, Biden cast the putative billionaire president as a charlatan populist whose tax policies, economic stewardship and overall erratic leadership style has hurt U.S. workers.

How a Beltway power couple and a political newcomer learned to thrive in the Trump era
The Washington Post by By Michelle Ye Hee Lee, Michael Scherer, Josh Dawsey and Anu Narayanswamy

When Brad Parscale was looking for advice about how to navigate Washington after running the digital strategy for Donald Trump’s upstart presidential campaign in 2016, the brash political newcomer turned to a Beltway power couple.

Katie Walsh and Mike Shields, both former chiefs of staff at the Republican National Committee, advised him on how to make the most of his new perch, he said.

Since then, the three have helped each other flourish inside the Republican Party ecosystem, recommending each other’s services to top GOP officials and candidates. Together, the trio have broad influence across the party — drawing millions of dollars from 23 party committees and organizations since the beginning of 2017, according to campaign finance filings and people familiar with their work.

Their dominance has alarmed other Republican Party strategists, who say the three have a disproportionate amount of sway — and have helped each other sustain that power, according to multiple people with knowledge of their roles.

Pa.’s election system is on the verge of the largest changes in decades — in time for the 2020 election
The Philadelphia Inquirer by Jonathan Lai

Pennsylvania Gov. Tom Wolf, a Democrat, has reached a deal with Republican lawmakers — who control the state legislature — on the largest fundamental modifications of how ballots are cast in decades.

Several are reforms that Democrats have long sought. And while none would catapult Pennsylvania to the bleeding edge of electoral reform, in many cases they would expand access to voting in a state that has fallen behind.

Electoral College 选举人团, 或选举团
electoral vote 选举人选票, 选举团投票(最终选出总统)
popular vote 大众直接选票(最终选出选举人)

college 这里是指:an organized group of professional people with particular aims, duties, and privileges.

Take the case of our blithe acceptance of the electoral college. There is nothing normal or democratic about choosing our president through a system that makes it ever more likely that the candidate who garners fewer votes will nonetheless assume power. For a country that has long claimed to model democracy to the world, this is both wrong and weird.

And there is also nothing neutral or random about how our system works. The electoral college tilts outcomes toward white voters, conservative voters and certain regions of the country. People outside these groups and places are supposed to sit back and accept their relative disenfranchisement. There is no reason they should, and at some point, they won’t. This will lead to a meltdown.

--The Washington Post by E.J. Dionne Jr. August 28, 2019

On Twitter, the Weekly Standard’s Jay Cost responded to Sanders. Over two dozen tweets, he argued against abolishing the electoral college, centering his argument on two points. First, that the country was created in a way that gave states a role in every level of government. Second, that having an electoral college forces candidates to build “geographically broad coalitions.”
