Description: Zhuang (壮族) is the second largest nationality in China with a population of more than 17,000,000. From generation to generation, Zhuang nationality settle down in the north and west of Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, the southeast of Yunnan province, Guangdong province, Guizhou province, and the junction between Hunan province and Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region.
Language: They speak in Zhuang language and write in sawndip.
Religion: MOZ is the main belief for Zhuang people. From Tang and Song Dynasties, Buddhism and Taoism were introduced. After 1858, Catholicism incame and Christianity was introduced in 1862.
Clothing Character: Blue, black and brown are main color of Zhuang clothing. Spinning, weaving and batik are household handicrafts for Zhuang women. Zhuang men usually dress in shirt button to the left or opening in front. Women wear embroidered shirt without collar, buttoned to the left. Women’s sleeve is broader than men’s.
Both men and women wear cloth shoes. Unmarried women have long hair with bangs that is sign of marital status. The hair of married women wear in a bun or coil, wrapped with black or colorful headscarf. Silver jewelry is prevailing in Zhuang nationality.
Food Culture: Zhuang people take rice and corn as their principle food. Sticky rice with five colors is a traditional snack of Zhuang nationality. It presents on black, red, yellow, white and purple, viewed as the symbol of good fortune and harvest.
Whenever traditional festivals such as Qingming festival, Dragon Boat festival, the 3rd of the lunar March, etc, Zhuang people get used to cooking the sticky rice with five colors. Rice wine is the main drink for gusts and celebrating festivals.
Festivals: The Spring Festival is the grandest, lasting for three days from the New Year’s Eve to the 2nd day of Lunar New Year. Usually, from the 23rd day of lunar December, they begin to make preparation such as cleaning, shopping, sewing clothes, posting couplets, making pastry, killing pig and so on. It is a festival for family reunion. Every people who works outside returns home before the Spring Festival.
Sanyuesan Festival (三月三) has been confirmed as a traditional festival of Zhuang nationality in 2014. On the day, every household enjoy the festival in different ways. Some make sticky rice with five colors, paint colorful eggs, kill duck or chicken, etc..
Arts and Handicraft: Song assembly and silk ball are ancient traditional entertainment of Zhuang nationality.
Zhuang brocade is well-known embroidered handicraft with a history of more than 1,000 years.
