Description: Uygur nationality (维吾尔族) inhabit at the foot of Tianshan Mountain, Xinjiang province. According to the census in 2006, Uygur nationality has a population of 9,413,796 in Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, occupying 46% of the total population in Xinjiang province. Uygur means “union”.
Language: Uigur. In history, Uygur people once used old Turkic, Ouigours, and old Uigur. After the introducing of Islam in the 10th century, Uigur based on Arabic was applied. They created new words on the base of Latin character. In the 1980s, they resumed to use the Uigur based on Arabic character.
Religion: Most of Uygur people believe in Islamism.
Clothe Character: Taqiyah Cap, the component of Uygur clothing, is also viewed as the representative of the beauty of Uygur nationality. Modern Taqiyah cap is collectively called four-edged Taqiyan Cap. Leather shoes and boots are popular by Uygur people, both men and women. Women like to wear ear ring, bangle and necklace. Uygur girls take long hair as beauty, so they comb dozens of thin braids before get married and changed into two after married.
Food Culture: Uygur nationality takes three meals a day, They usually take naan,, fruit sauce, tea milk and oil tea as breakfast, Xinjiang rice, steamed bun and noodles as lunch, and soup noodles as dinner. The shashlik of Xinjiang is extremely delicious.
Festivals: Eid al-Fitr (开斋节) is one of three festivals for Uygur nationality. They take breakfast before sunrise and take dinner until sunset.
Just as Muslim in other place, Eid Adha (古尔邦节) is one of their festivals held on 10th, December of the Islamic calendar. They make prayer, kill animal and dine together as the main content. This festival originate from the story of prophet-Mohammed Ibrahim.
Nowruz Festival-Nowruz festival (诺鲁孜节) is the traditional festival of Uygur, held on 21st, March.
