Mt. Songshan (嵩山), also called Zhong Yue, is well-known as one of the Five Great Mountains in China. Chinese three idea systems, Buddhism, Taoism and Confucianism meet here, so to some extent, it would be called the cultural or religious holy-land rather than a picturesque mountain.
It covered an area of about 450 square kilometers, with 72 peaks in total. The lowest altitude is 350 meters and the highest could be 1512 meters. It extends 70 kilometers from east to west. The valleys, caves, pools and waterfalls are everywhere, which provides the visitors with a unique and wonderful enjoyment. It has been listed as the “International Geological Park” by UNESCO.
The Central Mountain has rich forest resources, some of which are rare ancient trees with odd figures and literary quotations, such as the General Cypress in the Songyang Academy, the Fifth-rank Chinese Scholar tree in the Shaolin Temple, the Han (206BC-220AD) Maidenhair Tree in Fawang Temple, the Cypress Forest in the Zhongyue Temple, and the Bodhi tree in the Yongtai Temple, etc.
The mountain also boasts a large number of showplaces and cultural relics. The most famous Shaolin Temple is located here, where Shaolin monks exercise Qigong, Qinggong and other Shaolin Kong-fu (martial arts).
