In the Han Chinese folk legend, City God Temple protects the security of a city and the peace of the people. And now, as compared with rows of new buildings going up, City God Temple looks like an elderly who has seen changes of people and affairs. In the City God Temple, there is a famous archway. The arch is the second gate leading to the main court - Wenchang Pavilion. In the past, there was a delicate and beautiful music and dance ball. Where there was temple affairs, there were troupe performed mythical repertoire in it. In the past, there was thirty feet high memorial archway outside the second gate, which reads "Yin Yang signed". But it had been destroyed. Xi'an City God Temple fair(西安城隍庙会) is an important part of Xi'an culture.
However, the temple fair has been a scenery in the City God Temple. Xi'an Spring Festival Temple fair and the eighth day of the fourth lunar month folk festivals were once very flourishing, drawing huge crowds, all kinds of people flock here. The interpretation of their different life plays on the same field, the temple has become a popular commodity exchanges, interpersonal social opportunities. Tourists were bustling in it.
Until the fifties and sixties of the last century, many people go to City God temple to pray in New Year’s Day or the Lantern Festival. Every year in the eighth day of the fourth lunar day, people came here from all directions. The exuberant temple fairs continued until early Cultural Revolution. During the Cultural Revolution, people broke the "four olds", smashed shrines, demolished part of the building, and abolished the temple fair, the business gradually deserted. Until the reform and opening, the business is now only slowly recover.
Now, the folk temple fair revived and the bustling occasion would appear again. In the temple fair, you can see a wide variety of products, such as bottle plug, feather duster, little round mirror, New Year pictures, and full of annual taste. Various kinds of temple fair activities can be seen in Xi’an City God temple fair, such as Qinqiang Opera, chant, gong and drum music, folk songs, martial arts and acrobatics, famous patients and prayer meetings.
