Lantian Puhua pray for rain music is the wind and percussion music used in Buddhist, charity and sacrifice affairs which spread in Puhua Town, Lantian County, Shaanxi Province for thousands of years. Pray for rain music was born from Sui Dynasty, prospered in Tang Dynasty. In Tang Dynasty, the royal music spread to the folk society and integrated with folk music, thus formed the pray for rain music.
In history, the music mainly performed for Buddhist, charity and sacrifice ceremony. According to perform contents and form, pray for rain music can be divided into walking music (perform while walking) and sitting music (perform while chanting sutras indoors). Its melody is tactful, elegant, delicate and melodious. On May 20, 2006, Lantian Puhua Pray for Rain Music was included in the first batch of national intangible cultural heritage by the State Council.
Lantian County is located in the southeast part of Guanzhong plain and northern slope of Qinling Ridge, and it is the gate to Bashu (two ancient cities in Sichuan). The landscape is strange here as there are both plain and mountain range. People in Puhua Town have the custom of doing Buddhist and charity affairs.
